Johnson leads Mystic Schooners to victory

Groton — UConn's Karl Johnson pitched six strong innings for the win as the Mystic Schooners beat the New Bedford Bay Sox 9-2 in the New England Collegiate Baseball League on Thursday night.

Johnson (2-0) allowed four hits and a run and struck out nine with no walks. The Schooners (14-9) led 3-2 before breaking it open with six runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. Matthew O'Neill (Penn) doubled, homered and drove in four runs, Brett Rodriguez (Wofford) had two hits each and UConn's Chris Winkel doubled and drove in two runs for Mystic.

Tigers win

• Eric De La Rosa was 4-for-4 with a pair of RBI doubles as the Connecticu­t Tigers beat the Lowell Spinners 5-2 in a New York-Penn League game. Gresuan Silverio also had an RBI double and scored twice for the Tigers (8-12). Carlos Guzman (1-1) earned the win, allowing four hits and two unearned runs over five innings with six strikeouts and no walks. Jack O'Loughlin pitched the last four innings for a save. He struck out six with one walk and allowed two hits.

District 10 Senior softball

• Gretchen Dusza was the winning pitcher and drove in two runs as Waterford beat New London 10-7 in the opening game of the double-eliminatio­n tournament. Bella Williams tripled in a pair of runs for Waterford. Shylin Rock pitched for New London.

• Ledyard secured the No. 1 seed by beating Waterford 16-1 in the final pool play game on Tuesday. Winning pitcher Makenzie Jones was aiding by a 9-3-5-6 double play to end the second inning. Abby Fowler had two hits, including an inside-the-park grand slam, for Ledyard.

Gretchen Dusza scored a run and catcher Bella Williams had five putouts, including a diving catch, for Waterford.

District 10 softball (9-10)

• Groton/Mystic beat Waterford 9-4 in the opening game of the bestof-three finals. Emma Robinson was the winning pitcher and struck out eight. Lauren Pelletier doubled twice and drove in three runs, Maerin Lyon singled and doubled and Katie McPherson doubled and drove in two for Groton/Mystic. Waterford pitchers Ava Majeski and Charlotte Jessuck combined for seven strikeouts. Jenna Long and Jessuck had two hits each and Katie Dziecinny doubled for Waterford.

District 10 baseball (11-12)

• North Stonington beat Montville 7-0 behind pitchers Kyle Kessler and Sean Bergel. Kessler went the first 4.2 innings for the win. Keiran Bosco, Deondre Branfords and Kessler had two hits each for North Stonington. Cole Terni and Mason Snurkowski had two hits each for Montville.
