Mystic — Ruth Muriel (Hargrove) Melancon, 89, of Mystic, wife to the late Raymond Melancon Sr., passed away Sunday, July 1, 2018, at The Village at Buckland Court in South Windsor.

Ruth was the daughter of the late John and Anita (Fitzgerald) Hargrove. She was born and grew up in New London, where she graduated from the former Williams Memorial Institute (WMI), now known as Williams School. She settled in Mystic with her husband, Raymond, in 1964, where they raised their four children. Family was the center of Ruth’s life, and her greatest joy was spending time with her children, grandchild­ren, and great-grandchild­ren. Ruth also enjoyed traveling, sewing, baking, playing cards and exploring new restaurant­s with her husband. Being active in the community was very important to her and she was a long time member, as well as the past President, of the Mystic Woman’s Club. She also volunteere­d at the Mystic voting hall during election season.

Ruth is survived by her four children, Rayette Ramoya of Vernon, Raymond Melancon Jr. of Quaker Hill, Raylene Miller of Wendell, Mass., and Ruthann Melancon of Worcester, Mass.; her grandchild­ren, Jeanette Ramoya, Raymond Melancon III, Derek Melancon, Corey Melancon, Kelly Melancon, Holly Miller, Anita Miller Sackman; and great-grandchild­ren, Asia Miller, Bhodi Sackman, Wehnonah-Rae Miller Sackman, Raymond Melancon IV and Gevarri Melancon. She is survived by her sister, June Webb of Mystic. She was predecease­d by a sister, Alyce Kendall.

The family would like to thank the staff at The Village at Buckland Court in South Windsor for their loving care and compassion throughout the past two and half years. The family would also like to thank the Vernon VNA Hospice Team for their support and compassion during Ruth’s final days.

Her family will receive relatives and friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday, July 11 at the Mystic Funeral Home on Route 1 in Mystic. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday, July 12 at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main St., Mystic. Burial will follow at Elm Grove Cemetery, Route 27, Mystic.
