Niantic — Mary Ellen (Kelley) Shea passed away July 6, 2018, at Yale-New Haven Hospital following a brief illness.

She lived in Black Point Beach in Niantic following many years raising her family with her husband, Bob, in West Hartford. She was 85.

Mary Ellen enjoyed the blessings of a loving husband, a close family, and many friends. She was kind and possessed a fun, loyal and open spirit that attracted many lifelong friends. Mary Ellen was beloved by her family who depended upon her quiet wisdom, patience and good humor. She was an exceptionally good listener. The front porch of her home was a social hub, which she cherished and shared.

Born in Hartford on July 13, 1932, she graduated from Buckley High School, Class of 1950, and Central Connecticut State University in 1955 with a teaching degree.

Mary Ellen taught in the Hartford and West Hartford school systems for decades. She transitioned to an administrative position in the State of Connecticut’s House Clerk’s Office in the mid 1970s. That career change led to a fulfilling position as Special Assistant to Thomas Ritter, who was Speaker of the House at that time. She retired in 1996.

Mary Ellen always expressed that she felt most fortunate to have married Robert D. Shea of West Hartford. They were married 63 years and raised five children. In addition to her husband, she leaves Thomas R. Shea of Palm Springs, Calif.; Mary Frances Shea of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Timothy W. Shea and his wife Laura of Manhattan Beach, Calif.; Mary Elizabeth Williams and her husband David Williams of West Hartford; and John K. Shea and his wife Lisa of Redondo Beach, Calif. Mrs. Shea was endlessly proud of her grandchildren Kelley, Jake, Maddy, Shea, Hannah, Molly, Rory and Grace.
