Bakken’s no-hitter helps Waterford Babe Ruth 15s roll in state tournament

Waterford — Ryan Bakken pitched a no-hitter as Waterford defeated New Milford 6-0 in a the winners' bracket of the Connecticu­t Babe Ruth 15-year-old baseball tournament on Sunday at Waterford Babe Ruth Field.

Bakken struck out seven and needed only 89 pitches to send the District 6 champions into the winners' bracket final on Wednesday against Stamford, an 8-4 winner over Amity.

The game was scoreless until the fourth when a key bunt by Anthony Tonucci sparked a three-run rally that put Waterford in charge. Dan Driscoll had a hit and two RBI, Ryan O'Connell had a hit and scored twice, Robert Zawacki doubled and Bakken scored a pair of runs.

In the losers' bracket, Pawcatuck stayed alive with a 12-8 win over Newington. Pawcatuck will play New Milford in another eliminatio­n game on Monday at 5:30 p.m. at Veterans Field in Niantic.

CT Babe Ruth (14) baseball

• Darien defeated Waterford 2-1 in the opening round of the Connecticu­t Babe Ruth 14-year-old tournament at Trumbull. The District 6 champs will play Newtown in an eliminatio­n game on Monday at 7:30 p.m. Logan Avin pitched well in defeat, allowing only two runs over six innings, while Bryan Wielachows­ki, Will Sutman and Gavin Hernandez each had a hit.

CT Babe Ruth (13) baseball

• East Lyme bounced back in a big way with a 13-1 win over North Haven in the losers' bracket of the Connecticu­t Babe Ruth 13-year-old tournament at Newtown. The District 6 champs will play host Newtown in another eliminatio­n game on Monday at 7 p.m. Drew Beckham was the winning pitcher, allowing only three hits while striking out four over 5.2 innings, while Chris Martin had two hits and scored three runs while Blake Biggs was 2-for-4 with one run and one RBI.

District 10 LL baseball (10-11)

• Josh Bergstrom's three-run home run in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted Waterford to a 10-9 victory over Mystic in Game 1 of the District 10 championsh­ip series. Game 2 of the best-of-three series will be played on Monday. Brady Sutman opened the inning with a double and Tito Kiefer reached on an error before Bergstrom hit his blast. Mystic had rallied from a 6-1 deficit to take a 9-7 lead.

• Sean Kramer led Waterford with three hits and three RBI, Sutman had two doubles, Remy Coderre had a double and two runs, Kiefer scored three times, Bergstrom added a single, Evan Bouges had a two-run double and Lucas Saunders added an RBI double. Finn Eck had a single, double, two RBI and run for Mystic while Jack DeLabry had a single, triple and two runs, Hayden Chappel scored twice and William Berard had a double and two RBI.

District 10 SL softball (15-16)

• Ledyard won its second District 10 Senior League title with a 3-0 win over Waterford. Makenzie Jones and Hannah Smith combined to pitch a shutout for Ledyard, who scored its first run in the first when Amanda Cox doubled home Shailynn Williams, who tripled moments earlier. Samantha Lajoie added a two-run single in the sixth of Gretchen Dusza, who pitched well for Waterford in defeat.

American Legion Zone 6

• New London erupted for three runs in the 10th inning to defeat Danielson 5-2. Hendrick Khoury pitched three scoreless innings and struckout out five to earn the win after Robert Otanez allowed only two runs over seven innings. Rob Parra broke a 2-2 tie with an RBI single in the 10th and Connor Surprenant also singled home a run. Parra, Elijah Martinez, Mike Williams and Thomas Brown had two hits apiece for New London (9-11).

SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth

• A.J. Pia's two-run single in the sixth inning provided Groton with some cushion in its 7-5 victory over Waterford in a SEC 16-18 Babe Ruth game. Chip Kamercia had a pair of hits for Groton, including a double, while Phil Warner also doubled. Nich Zanghetti had an RBI single for Waterford in the sixth.

New York-Penn League

• The Connecticu­t Tigers won their fourth straight game and ninth in last 11 with a 5-2 win over the Vermont Lake Monsters. Jose Vasquez (3-1) allowed no earned runs over five innings while Yaya Chentouf needed just nine pitches to pitch a perfect ninth for his third save. Jose King and Silverio had two hits apiece for the Tigers (11-12).

NECBL

• UConn's Chris Winkel hit a pair of solo home runs while Zach Ardito (Hartford) added a two-run shot as the Mystic Schooners (16-11) outlasted the Winnipesau­kee Muskrats 9-6 in the NECBL.
