Readers of theday.com debated a Stonington proposal to ban plastic straws, bags and takeout containers as a danger to wildlife in town waters (“Stonington forms task force to look into banning plastic bags, straws,” July 11, 2018).

“Do the right thing;get rid of the plastic bags and plastic straws.” — newman

“...Bags are recyclable, but separately from ‘hard’ household plastics as they gum up the sorting machines. Both loose bags and straws are sometimes ingested by wildlife.” — Anon

“I was in my favorite grocery store in Mystic. Plastic is needed to cover meats. Its also needed to cover plastic covered meats as there is ‘juice’ from the package you don’t want contaminating every other item. Plastic covers potatoes, onions, and other vegetables and fruits. What happened to the ‘save a tree fanatics’? Plastic is necessary. It needs to be disposed of properly. Figure out how we should do that & we’ll do it.

“You can have my plastic straw. But don’t go crazy.” — wisewithage

“Here’s a thought...up the fine for littering. The nips, plastic bags, fast food bags, cups and straws... I pick them up, but it never ends. How about a $1,000.00 fine and community service if caught littering. I’ll personally set up a camera and get the plate #’s on my street.” — foofaraw

“Maybe something could be done to address the plastic nip bottles sold in liquor stores that are all over the roadsides. I bet that almost all of them sold in CT are thrown out car windows . ... Let’s get serious on enforcing existing littering laws before we adopt some other feel good laws that are not enforced. You know, kind of like the cell phone use in vehicles.” — Henry’s dad
