Noank — Brian Archer Thorp passed away on July 14, 2018, at home surrounded by family.

He was born in Manchester, on March 5, 1943, to the late William H. and Anita P. Thorp. Brian moved to Noank in 1946, and graduated from Fitch Senior High and Quinnipiac University. He went on to have a successful career which took him across the country from coast to coast. Happy to retire, he returned to his beloved Connecticu­t in 2007. Once home, Brian poured himself into a number of causes and passions serving the community.

He is survived by his wife Joan MacGregor; his son Christophe­r and wife Betsy of Stonington; his daughter Ashley and husband Scott of New Bern, N.C.; and son Jonathan and wife Jaclyn of Fort Worth, Texas. Also surviving Brian is his brother Barry and wife Stephanie of Mystic; his sister Julia Ratliff of Signal Mountain, Tenn.; sisters-in-law Faye Southern and husband Donn of Memphis, Tenn., and Bette Collins and husband James of Mystic; six wonderful grandchild­ren Jenny, Matthew, Peter, Elias, Bennett, and Bexley; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews. Brian was predecease­d by his brother-in-law James Ratliff and nephew James Collins.

A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, July 20, at the Noank Baptist Church.

Waterford — A Pennsylvan­ia woman was killed Sunday afternoon when the car she was a passenger in was struck from behind by a pickup truck driven by a Waterford man in the southbound lanes of Interstate 95 in the vicinity of Exit 81.

State police said that at approximat­ely 3:04 p.m., a Nissan Altima driven by Lynn Catalano, 79, of Branford and a Honda Civic driven by Adam J. Ringler, 31, of Mechanicsb­urg, Pa., were stopped in the left lane in heavy traffic just north of the weigh station.

Police said that a Ford 250 pickup truck driven by Daniel P. Brockway, 29, of 6 Mallard Lane, Waterford, failed to slow for traffic and struck the rear of the Civic and then continued on to strike the rear of the Altima.

Police said that Leotie M. Miller, 25, of Newport, Pa., who was a rear seat passenger in the Civic, suffered fatal injuries. Catalano, Ringler, Brockway and another passenger in the Civic, Michael K. Fox, 34, of Mechanicsb­urg, Pa. all sustained minor injuries and were taken to Lawrence + Memorial Hospital.

Police said the accident is under investigat­ion. Anyone with informatio­n about the crash is asked to call state police at 860-8486500.

The southbound lanes of the highway remain closed into Sunday evening with motorists exiting the highway at exit 81.

Monique Theriault, 62, of Bristol, was charged Friday with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs and failure to drive in the proper lane.

John A. Crosby III, 32, of 180 Midway Oval was charged Saturday with second-degree strangulat­ion and disorderly conduct.

Wilberto J. Cruz, 46, of 8 Meryl Court was charged Saturday with third-degree assault and second-degree breach of peace.

Groton — Five people, including two children, were rescued from the waters off Bluff Point Coastal Reserve Sunday afternoon after their small sailboat capsized.

David Henry, a captain with TowBoat US, said two of the company’s locally-based boats responded to the call of people in the water about 2 p.m. along with East Lyme police boat which was on duty at New London’s Sailfest celebratio­n.

He said they were able to pull the five, all of whom were wearing personal flotation devices, from the choppy waters about halfmile off shore. Henry said they appeared to be scared but not injured. Flanders Road, Niantic, was charged Friday with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, drinking while driving and speeding.

Edwin Baez, 27, of 232 Franklin St., Norwich, was charged Friday with four counts of first-degree failure to appear in court, two counts of second-degree failure to appear in court, criminal violation of a protective order and conspiracy to commit second-degree stalking.

Nicole K. Schara, 33, of 135 Oral School Road, Mystic, was charged Saturday with second-degree failure to appear in court, improper use of markers, driving an unregister­ed motor vehicle and driving without minimum insurance.

Douglas K. Marshall, 32, of 16 Russ Sim Heights, Groton, was charged Sunday with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
