Edwin Swanson III

New London County — Edwin G. Swanson III, 83, died peacefully on Saturday, June 30, 2018.

He is the son of the late Edwin G. Swanson Jr. and Mildred (Darrow) Swanson. He is predeceased by his loving wife and soul mate, Elaine C. (Johnson) Swanson; and his stepdaughter, Penny Schalla.

He is survived by his remaining stepchildren, James T. Schalla Jr. and his wife, Cynthia, of Mount Pleasant, S.C., Donna L. Schalla and her husband, Marc, of Spain and Douglas A. Schalla and his wife, Angela, of Groton; son, Kerry P. Swanson of Mystic; and daughter, Lorelei I. (Swanson) Bray and husband, Carlton Bray, of Mystic; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He was also predeceased by niece, Debra A. (Walsh) Robinson; and survived by nephews, Cornelius M. Walsh and Thomas A. Walsh, all of whom he loved and raised after the passing of their parents.

Edwin was born in New London, on Nov. 6, 1934, and was a lifetime resident of New London County. He graduated from Stonington High School in 1952 and was in the Army National Guard from 1952 to 1955. He spent several years working at Electric Boat and managing local marinas before opening his own business, Ed’s Lawnmower Repair. He greatly enjoyed his work and his customers, and stopped working only when forced to retire due to health issues. Edwin enjoyed spending time hunting, fishing, clamming, traveling, camping, and playing board and card games.

Edwin’s funeral service will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday, July 24, at New Life Church, 1729 Center Groton Road, Ledyard.
