Plainfield — Sophie Woodmansee, 92, died on Wednesday, July 18, 2018, in Plainfield with her family at her side.

She was born in Griswold, on Jan. 27, 1926, the daughter of Michael and Mary Yurechko. She was the wife of the late Clark Winslow Woodmansee Jr., and together they raised four children on a dairy farm in Preston.

Sophie is survived by her four children and their spouses, Rosanna Woodmansee of Sudbury, Mass., Clark W. Woodmansee III and Lois of Preston, Jessica Tedisky and Steve of Groton and Dell Woodmansee and Jill of Preston. Sophie is also survived by her 10 loving grandchildren, Clark Woodmansee IV, Anne Klewin, Liz Geer, Emily Kelusky, Lauren Jurczyk, Jackie Benevides, Steven Tedisky, Danielle Aleria, Anna Forman and Taylor Woodmansee. She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren.

In addition to being a mother and a dairy farmer’s wife, she created the Amos Lake Beach Club in 1967, a family-oriented beach and camping area which she operated for 25 years and is still in operation today. She found her true calling here and was her happiest when sitting on the hill overseeing families enjoying themselves.

She was a member of the Preston City Congregational Church, the Preston Historical Society, the Preston Library Association, the Ladies Auxiliary and other groups affiliated with community service.

Sophie loved spending time with her grandchildren and will be greatly missed by them. She was kind and welcoming to all. In her later years, her physical being was limited by Parkinson’s Disease. With grace and warmth, she lived the past 10 years needing help with all activities of daily living. Although there was physical struggle, she continued to read books, enjoyed watching golf on TV and kept her mind actively learning.

The family wishes to acknowledge with deep gratitude the staff at Colonial Health and Rehab in Plainfield CT.

A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Sept. 8 (rain date, Sept. 9) at her beloved Amos Lake Beach Club, 53 Hollowell Road, Preston, and all are welcome. At her request, no donations or flowers, please. A private burial will take place at the discretion of the family.
