Southport — Thomas J. Matis, age 93, of Southport, beloved husband of Frances Gemza Matis, entered into eternal rest on Monday, July, 23, 2018. He was a kind, intelligent and hardworking man who had a full and satisfying life. We will miss him dearly, but part of him will always be with us in the many ways he touched our lives.

He was born in Southport, on Dec. 8, 1924, son of the late George and Mary Weber Matis. Tom proudly served in the U.S. Army during the end of WWII. He retired as a tool and die designer from Pitney Bowes in Stamford. He was a member of St. Anthony’s Holy Name Society, a life member of the Southport Volunteer Fire Department and a member of the Knights of Columbus. His passions were bowling and golfing.

Tom will be sadly missed by his family and friends. In addition to Fran, his loving wife of 68 years, he is survived by his devoted daughter Sharon Matis of Gales Ferry, son Richard Matis and his wife Elizabeth of East Lyme; cherished grandchildren, Daniel Matis and his fiancée Melissa Johnson, and Corinna Matis Linski and her husband William Linski; great-grandchildren Dylan Matis and Chase Linski; and a sister Helen Matis of Southport. Tom was predeceased by his brothers George, John, Joe and Walter Matis, and his sisters Florence Kaczegowicz and Ann Bensey.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, in St. Anthony of Padua Church in Fairfield, followed by interment in Oak Lawn Cemetery in Fairfield. Calling hours will be held between the hours of 4 and 7 p.m. on Thursday, at the Fairfield Funeral Home of Edmund W. Dougiello, 36 South Pine Creek Road, Fairfield.
