Mystic — Gloria Smith, 89, of Mystic, died Tuesday, July 24, 2018, at Mystic Healthcare. She is survived by her beloved husband of nearly 66 years, Alfred E. Smith.

Gloria was devoted to her family. She always put the needs of others before hers. But nothing was more important than her devotion to God.

She was a 1948 graduate of Fitch Senior High School. After high school she went to work at the Bailey Agency in Groton. She then married Alfred Smith on Oct. 11, 1952, and devoted the rest of her life to her family and faith.

Gloria was very fond of music and spent many years singing in the choirs at the Poquonnock Bridge Baptist Church and the Groton Bible Chapel. Gloria loved singing praises to God while in the congregation at the North Stonington Bible Church which was the last church she belonged to. For many years she sang with her church praise group at various nursing homes in the area, and one simple pleasure she enjoyed was riding along River Road in Mystic and enjoying the scenery.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her son, David A. Smith and his wife, Judy Smith, of Mystic; and her daughter, Debra A. Luke and her husband, Mark Luke, of Mystic. Gloria is also survived by the loves of her life: grandchildren, Lauren Smith, Heather Smith and Rachel Heasley; and great-grandchild, Brayden Heasley. She is survived by her sister, Mary Ellen Walsh and her husband, Richard, of Mystic; her brother, Ronald Holmes and his wife, Connie Holmes, of Florida; four nephews and one niece.

She is predeceased by her parents, Walter and Ruth (Long) Holmes.

A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Aug. 4, 2018, at the North Stonington Bible Church, 100C Jeremy Hill Road, North Stonington. Burial will be private for the family.

The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., historic downtown Mystic, is assisting the family.
