East Lyme earns trip to East Regional 8-10 LL baseball tourney
East Lyme's 8-10 all-star baseball team has earned a trip to the East Regional Little League Invitational.
The District 10 champions completed a three-game sweep to capture the Connecticut state championship tournament, winning the title with a dramatic 12-11 victory over Fairfield National in Thursday night's final at the Willimantic Little League Complex.
East Lyme won the game when Ryan Cellemme scored the game-winning run in the bottom of the sixth on a base hit by Ryan Wargo, who had three hits and was the winning pitcher in relief.
East Lyme, which defeated Jewett City 9-2 in its opening game on Monday, advanced to the championship round on Wednesday with a 4-3 victory over Southington South. In that game, Aidan Cochrane was 2-for-3 with an RBI and reserve Kaiden Gates went 2-for-2. Andrew Sevigny, the second of three East Lyme pitchers, earned the win while Ryan Wargo came in for the save.
The East Regional will begin on Saturday, Aug. 4, in Cranston, R.I.
American Legion Zone 6
• Waterford's Collin Bakken was named Most Valuable Player for the 2108 American Legion Zone 6 baseball season.
Niantic's Trevor Delesdernier was named Outstanding Pitcher while Niantic's Grant Livingston and Willimantic's Chris Dumas shared Coach of the Year honors.
The all-star team included Niantic's Matt Malcom (catcher), Moosup's Caleb Deslauriers (first base), Tri-Town's Kobe Akana and Jewett City's Bryce Mileski (middle infielders), Moosup's Izaiah Thompson (third base), Niantic's Matt Abbey, Tri-Town's Mitchel Barylski and Willimantic's Luke Hawthorne (outfielders) and Bakken, Delesdernier and Willimantic's Andre Jose (pitchers).
Reserves were Danielson's Jacob Tarryk, Bryan Albee and Zach Gagnon, Tri-Town's Luke Mathewson and Evan Zanauskas, Jewett City's Logan McGeowan and Willimantic's Matt Wolicki. Sportsmanship award winners were Danielson's Tyler Cournoyer, Jewett City's Derek Taylor, Ledyard-Pawcatuck's John Domijan, Moosup's Daniel Flanagan, Niantic's Tom Mason, Norwich's Riley Burke, Tri-Town's Kobe Akana, Waterford's Kyle Kobyluck and Willimantic's Troy Watts.
Tigers lose in 11
• The host Auburn Doubledays scored twice in the bottom of the 11th inning to beat the Connecticut Tigers 8-7 in a New York-Penn League game. Wenceel Perez hit an RBI single in the top of the 11th to give the Tigers the lead, but a bases-loaded walk in the bottom of the inning tied the game and Pablo O'Connor's RBI single gave Auburn (21-18) the win.
Per minor league rules, each team begins the inning with a runner on second base once the game goes to extra innings.
Perez was 4-for-6 with three RBI, Cam Warner doubled twice, Nick Ames singled and doubled and Clark Brinkman had two hits and scored twice for the Tigers (19-20).
