Waterford — Edwin E. “Pete” Hyde, 83, of Waterford, passed away suddenly on July 27, 2018, at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital in New London.

He was born Sept. 1, 1934, in New London, the son of the late Edwin Elmer and Margaret (Betts) Hyde. For the past 56 years, Pete spent most of his days with his wife, companion (and best friend), Ruth Hyde. Together they enjoyed sports, collecting memorabilia and owning a business, Hydesports. They enjoyed watching horse races, eating out, antique shopping, and just spending their days together. Typically, Pete could be seen running across the Niantic bridge, on his daily three-mile run/walk (no small feat for a 83 year old!)

Pete attended the former Bulkeley School for three years, and was a member of the first graduating class of New London High School in 1952.

He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Ruth (Zecchi) Hyde; son Michael Hyde and his wife Leslie Walker Hyde of Marlborough; daughter Rachel Hyde-McGuinness of Colchester, and her companion Jason Dennis; eight grandchildren, Taylor, McKenzie, Whitney and Jordan Hyde, and Emma, Olivia, Sonny and Siara McGuinness; and one great-grandchild Dante DiCocco.

The family will receive relatives and friends from 4 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 1, at the Thomas L. Neilan & Sons Funeral Home, 48 Grand St., Niantic, with a funeral service to follow at 5:30 p.m. Interment will be private.

Donations may be made to Shriners Hospital for Children-Boston, Development Office, 51 Blossom St., Boston, MA 02114. Online condolences may be expressed to the family by visiting www.neilanfuneralhome.com.
