Schooners’ Zach Thompson honored

Groton — Zach Thompson, a starting pitcher for the Mystic Schooners, was named Pitcher of the Week in the New England Collegiate Baseball League on Monday.

Thompson, a right hander from Maryland, was dominant in his only start last week, pitching six innings and allowing only three hits while striking out 11 of the 21 batters (he did not issue a walk) in a 6-1 victory over New Bedford on July 23. The only run he allowed was unearned.

He is 2-1 with a 2.80 in eight games for the Schooners with only seven walks and 43 strikeouts in 41.1 innings.

In addition, teammate Freddy Sabido (Wagner) made the honor roll with four hits in three games, including three doubles, while driving in two runs.

Mystic, which is still trying to nail down a playoff berth (only three games remain in the regular season), was off on Monday but visits Ocean State today at 6:30 p.m.

New York-Penn League

• Nick Ames' single drove in Reece Hampton as the Connecticu­t Tigers scored twice with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning to beat the Vermont Lake Monsters 4-3. Isrrael De La Cruz singled to start the bottom of the ninth. Reece Hampton followed with a double and Bryce Nightengal­e was intentiona­lly walked. Sam McMillan tied the game with an RBI single, followed by Ames' game-winning hit.

Felix Viloria pitched three innings of hitless relief with two strikeouts to earn the win for Connecticu­t (21-20). Hampton went 3-for-4, including a triple, with two RBI and De La Cruz scored three times. Vermont is 20-23.

Black Wolves sign Bomberry

• Defender Adam Bomberry will return to the New England Black Wolves after signing a two-year deal with the National Lacrosse League team. Bomberry had 14 points on six goals and eight assists in 17 games for New England during the 2017-18 season.

"We are very excited to get one of our core players back in Adam Bomberry," Black Wolves general manager Rich Lisk said in a release.

"Adam had a breakout year last year and he is an important piece in our push to bringing a championsh­ip to New England."

UConn hires Swinney

• Adrianne Swinney, the deputy athletic director at UNC Wilmington for the last three years, has been named chief operating officer at UConn, athletic director David Benedict announced.

Swinney will oversee several aspects of the department, including equipment services, sports medicine, sports performanc­e, athletic training, and will serve as the department liaison for Admissions, Title IX & Gender Equity and OIE/Community Standards.
