Stonington — Frederick W. Hermes Jr., 95, of Villas, N.J., formerly of Mystic and Groton, passed away on Jan. 10, 2018.

Frederick was born in Mystic. He was the son of the late Katherine (Brunke) and Frederick W. Hermes Sr. He was valedictor­ian of his graduating class at Stonington High School, and a graduate of the U.S. Coast Guard (USCG) Academy in New London, Class of 1945. In 2015, he celebrated his 70th class reunion. He was Commanding Officer of two USCG cutters prior to his retirement as an USCG Commander (Cmdr.) in 1964.

After his retirement from the USCG, he was a high school honors math teacher in Groton, and coached freshman football. He was a private yacht captain in Stonington, a member of the VFW in Villas, N.J., the D.A.V. in Del Haven, N.J., Villas Fishing Club, American Humane Society and the Sierra Club. He enjoyed boating, fishing, traveling and spending time with his children and grandchild­ren.

He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Margaret, whom he married Aug. 14, 1986, at the USCG Academy in New London; sons Frederick W. III (Linda) and Brian (Estelle); daughters Cmdr. Glena Tredinnick, USCG (Ret.) (John), Megan Hermes Rios, and Rebecca M. Hermes; six grandchild­ren and 10 great-grandchild­ren. Frederick was preceded in death by his sister Helen.

Cmdr. Hermes’ remains will be laid to rest during a military burial at sea off the coast of Connecticu­t in August 2018. Donations in his memory may be made to the U.S. Coast Foundation by calling (860) 535-0786.
