The Day

’80s throwback

- — Mary Biekert

As you may have noticed, the world seems to have been in a perpetual state of nostalgia for the ’80s over the last couple years. Riding in on that ’80s-loving wave will be Culture Club and their new “Life Tour,” which will stop at Foxwoods Sunday.

The band, known for its hits “Karma Chameleon,” “I’ll Tumble 4 Ya” and “Do You Really Want to Hurt Me,” is also remembered for its glamorously androgynous front man, Boy George. He, too, will be at Sunday’s performance, bringing a perfect amalgamation of that time period with him. Think: fantastic costumes, dramatic makeup, synthesizers and smooth vocals.

Similar to Prince and David Bowie, Boy George helped set a precedent for breaking heteronormative stereotypes in pop culture and has been a champion of the LGBTQ community. But he also doesn’t want to polarize his straight audience. In a recent interview with the Tampa Bay Times, he explained that his tour won’t feel like a pride parade. “I also bake cakes for straight people,” he said. “That’s going to be my mantra for this tour: ‘I hope to bake cakes for straight people. They’re spongy and they’re sweet.’”

Having sold tens-of-millions of records worldwide since Culture Club’s 1982 debut album, “Kissing to be Clever,” we’re expecting a high turnout at Sunday’s event. Look forward to hearing all their biggest hits over a 13-track set list.

Oh, and ’80s fans will get another treat Sunday — Tom Bailey of the synth-based, New Wave act the Thompson Twins (known for “Hold Me Now,” and “Doctor! Doctor!”).

Boy George and Culture Club and Thompson Twins’ Tom Bailey, 7 p.m., Sunday, Foxwoods’ Grand Theater; $35-$75; 1-800-200-2882.
