Domnarski signs with the Detroit Tigers
Former Stonington standout also pitched for Avery Point, UConn and the Schooners
Doug Domnarski wasn't ready to give up on his dream. And, thanks to the Detroit Tigers, he doesn't have to.
Pawcatuck's Domnarski, the former Stonington High School standout, received a call from the team on Thursday night and signed with them on Friday.
"I had no clue they were interested ,'' said the 24- year-old left-handed pitcher. "They called me saying they'd like to have me pitch in the GCL (Gulf Coast League).''
Domnarski will report to Lakeland, Fla., on Sunday. He was released by the Miami Marlins on June 27.
"I was kind of surprised,'' said Domnarski. "I wasn't really expecting it. It's part of the business.''
Domnarski was drafted by the Marlins in the 27th round of the 2017 draft. He pitched at Avery Point for two seasons before spending his final two seasons at UConn. He had an earned run average of 1.40 in 16 games out of the bullpen for the Marlins over two seasons.
Domnarski also pitched for the Mystic Schooners in the New England Collegiate Baseball League.
With the Connecticut Tigers of the New York-Penn League having a month left in their season, there's a slim chance he could pitch again at Dodd Stadium this year.
"It would be nice,'' said Domnarski. "But I'm just going to do what they tell me.
"I still wanted to keep chasing the dream. I want to see how far I can go. It's a good feeling that teams are still looking for guys like me.'' d.davis@theday.com
