ONE-DAY FISHING LICENSES WILL BE FREE SATURDAY

-

State officials will waive fees for a one-day fishing license Saturday.

People will be able to get a free one-day fishing license for both freshwater and saltwater fishing through the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection’s online system or at any venue that sells fishing licenses. A license is required for anyone over the age of 16 and normally costs between $14 and $63, depending on whether the applicant is a Connecticut resident, his or her age and what kind of fishing is planned.

More information and DEEP’s listing of fishing spots can be found in its 2018 Connecticut Angler’s Guide, available in English and Spanish on the agency’s website, bit.ly/DEEPfish, or by calling (860) 424-3474.

Boasting access to trout, bass, pike, panfish and saltwater species like striped bass, fluke, porgy and bluefish, DEEP officials said in a news release that the free license is a way to encourage people new to fishing or who haven’t fished in a long time to rediscover it.

In celebration of Saltwater Fishing Day, DEEP also will host educational activities for visitors to Fort Trumbull State Park in New London from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, including fishing and crabbing, a saltwater fish exhibit and a touch tank with live marine animals.
