Uncasville — Helen M. Kukenis Ferencek, also known as “Cookie,” died on Monday, Aug. 13, 2018, at the age of 90.

Born on July 11, 1928, she was the daughter of the late John and Appolonia Kukenis. Her loving husband of many years, Zoltan, died in 2015. Mary Sherman, her daughter, died in 2000. Also, Helen’s sister Frances LaVigne and niece Michele LaVigne predecease­d her.

She leaves behind her daughter Jane Klugman (Arnold), granddaugh­ter Carina Brimat (Daniel) with whom she had a very special relationsh­ip, her nephew Raymond LaVigne, and cousin Diane Grigaitis, along with other relatives and friends.

Helen was very fortunate to have her companion, Katherine Hemond, for many years as a caregiver and dear friend. The family is very grateful to her for her compassion and support. A warm thanks to Wendy Mileski who always showed kindness and concern.

Helen (Cookie) attended St. Francis School of Nursing in Hartford, and graduated as a registered nurse. She was employed at the Norwich Hospital until her retirement and was a fierce advocate for the mentally ill for over 50 years.

Helen was a devoted Catholic whose faith was the guiding force throughout her life.

A Funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 25, at St. Peter and Paul Church in Norwich, meeting directly at the church. There are no calling hours. The burial will be at a later date at the convenienc­e of the family. Please omit flowers.
