Groton — Joan K. (Hughes) Harvey, 87, peacefully passed away surrounded by family in her Noank home on Friday, Aug. 17, 2018.

She is survived by three children: Michael (Veronika), Michele and Patricia (Timothy); six grandchild­ren and one great-granddaugh­ter. She also leaves behind her sister, Mary Jane (Hughes) Pollard; and numerous nieces, nephews and many good friends.

She was predecease­d by her husband of 53 years, James Harvey; son, Mark; and daughter, Heather.

Born to James Henry Hughes and Eleanor (MacDonald) Hughes, Joan graduated from the Robert E. Fitch Senior High School in 1949 and from White Plains Hospital School of Nursing in 1952. She always stayed in touch with her classmates from high school and nursing school, attending numerous reunions including the 50th reunions of both schools. She had special training in psychiatri­c nursing, and capped her career by caring for people suffering from chemical dependenci­es at Stonington Institute, formerly Starlite Farms. Spirituall­y anchored to Noank, she traveled widely, living four years in Scotland and Spain in the 1960s. She traveled to the West Coast and Hawaii, as well as making numerous visits to Russia and Mexico.

Joan’s family will greet relatives and friends from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday, Aug. 24, at The Dinoto Funeral Home, 17 Pearl St., Mystic. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday, at Saint Mary, Mother of the Redeemer Church on 69 Groton Long Point Road, Groton. Burial will follow in St. Patrick’s Cemetery, River Road, Mystic.
