Montville — Charles M. Baker, 80, of Uncasville, died peacefully at home on Wednesday, Aug. 22, 2018.

Charles was born in Old Town, Maine, on March 29, 1938. He was the 10th of 16 children born to John and Isabelle (Taylor) Baker.

Chuck worked for United Nuclear in Uncasville as a machinist supervisor until a car accident left him disabled and unable to continue his career. Many hobbies kept Chuck occupied over the years. He had a great mind for building and over the span of 30 years, built three unique homes for his beloved family. Chuck also had a knack for fishing and spent many evenings on Amos Lake in Preston trolling for trout. He was also a parishione­r of Saint Catherine of Siena in Preston. Music soothed his soul and his beautiful voice and guitar playing was enjoyed by family and friends.

Charles is survived by his beloved wife of 50 years, Susan D. Baker; his daughters, Christina Baker of Jewett City and Carolyn Rowbotham and her husband, David, of Waterford; and three grandsons, Travis Baker of Jewett City and Connor and Cayden Rowbotham of Waterford.

Charles is survived by six sisters and three brothers, Theresa Algard of Watertown, S.D., Mary Blair of Veazie, Maine, Ruth Grindle of Westbrook, Maine, Rose Bishop and her husband, Richard, of Ashaway, R.I., Leona Gagnier of Port Orange, Fla., Joan Knuti of Rock Hill, S.C., Richard Baker and his wife, Myrtle, of Old Town, Maine, Joseph Baker and his wife, Mary “Mimi,” of Lee, Maine, and David Baker and his wife, Gloria, of Milford, Maine. He is also survived by one sister-in-law, Judy Milholland and her husband, John, of Tijeras, N.M.; and two brothers-inlaw, David Rogers and his wife, Maryanne, of Branford and John Jalonski of Waterford; and many, many nieces, nephews and cousins. Two lifetime friends, brothers Jerry and Roger Vowels also survive him.

Charles was predecease­d by his parents, John and Isabelle Baker; his two brothers, John “Buster” Baker and Patrick Baker; four sisters, Helen Varney, Rita Jalonski, Lilian Kafka and Marion Carrier; and brothers-in-law, Gerald Blair, Robert Varney, John Knuti, Lawrence Grindle, Ernie Kafka, James Algard, Carl Gagnier and Victor Carrier. He was also predecease­d by his mother and father-in-law, John and Josephine Rogers. Longtime neighbor and good friend, Svend Lerche of Preston, also predecease­d him.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:30 a.m. Friday, Aug. 31, at Saint Catherine of Siena in Preston. Burial will be private at the convenienc­e of the family.
