SETRA ARTES GALLERY HOSTS PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION ABOUT LONDON’S LATE-’70S PUNK SCENE

- — Mary Biekert

Stonington’s newest art gallery, Setra Artes, will be hosting “PUNK!” this month — a photo exhibition detailing London’s wild and ground-breaking punk scene of the 1970s.

The show will display original photographs taken by photographer Sheila Rock. Rock’s photos, which focus on band members from the Sex Pistols, the Clash, Blondie and Generation X, among others, place viewers at the center of this once-burgeoning scene, capturing the movement’s cultural impact on British society and the world at large.

As a young American photographer, Rock moved to London in 1970 and established herself as one of the primary documenters of the London Punk Scene. Being her first exploration into photography, many these early photos were experimental, gritty and raw — reflecting the same elements that punk has become known for. Rock eventually would go on to work for Face Magazine, German Vogue, Elle, Glamour, Time Magazine, and Rolling Stone, among many others. A number of her portraits are held in London’s National Portrait Gallery. She recently established residence in Stonington Borough.

An opening reception for the show will be held at 6 p.m. Friday at the gallery located at 11 Grand St., Stonington, and is free and open to the public. The show will run until Sept. 30. Limited edition prints will be on sale, and her book “Punk +” will also be available. The book documents the styles, performances and attitudes of the early punk scene. All books are signed.

Hours are 11 a.m.-5 p.m. Wed.Fri., 9 a.m.-9 p.m. Sat., 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Sun. and by appointment. Call (774) 319-6144 or visit www. setraartes.com.
