Ledyard — After a long courageous battle with cancer, we are sad to say Frederick J. Lewis, 82, of Ledyard, formerly of West Hartford and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla., passed away peacefully on Friday, Aug. 24, 2018.

He was born on July 12, 1936, son of John and Ada Lewis. He was predecease­d by his three brothers, William R. Lewis, John C. Lewis II and Thomas G. Lewis.

Fred is survived by his best friend and wife of 60 years, Janet M. Lewis; his three children and their spouses, daughter, Deborah L. Brown (David), and his two sons, Frederick “Rick” J. Lewis Jr. (Alison) and Michael M. Lewis (Melanie). He is also the proud and devoted grandfathe­r to six grandchild­ren, Kyle Lewis, Amanda Brown, Mackenzie Lewis, David Brown, Emily and Robert Lewis; and an uncle to many nieces and nephews.

Fred was a 1958 graduate of Boston College. He served as a lieutenant in the U.S. Army Artillery, Fort Still, Okla., and was a captain in the CT National Guard.

He had an esteemed career as a profession­al insurance agent, being a CLU designee, co-owner of the Lewis Companies in Wethersfie­ld and Palm Beach Gardens, Fla. He was also owner and operator of Merdak Corp in Ledyard.

Fred was an avid fan of BC football, the Red Sox and Mickey Mouse. He will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Friday, Oct. 5, at St. Patrick Church, 32 East Main St., Mystic. There are no calling hours.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Cancer Society.
