Coast Guard volleyball wins twice on opening day

— The Coast Guard Academy volleyball team won a pair of matches to open the season Friday at the North County Invitation­al at Clarkson University, beating Keuka 3-0 and Clarkson 3-2.

The Bears play two more matches Saturday to close out the tournament, playing St. Lawrence at noon and Geneseo at 2 p.m.

Against Keuka, Bridget Boyle and Mary Sweet each had a team-high five kills as Coast Guard won 25-8, 25-17, 25-16. Mackenna Martin had 13 assists and seven digs, Nikki Sefcik nine assists and Angelou Dunton a team-high nine digs in the win. Keuka scored the first eight points of the third game, but Coast Guard later ran off nine straight points to take a 10-9 lead.

Dunton had 17 kills, 20 digs and three aces as Coast Guard outlasted Clarkson 25-20, 19-25, 25-15, 21-25, 23-21. Freshman Amanda Dake added 15 kills and 18 digs for the Bears, while Martin had 37 assists and Veronica Hine led the way with 28 digs. Men's soccer • Coast Guard opened the season with a 2-1 overtime loss against Thomas on day one of the University of Southern Maine Husky Fall Challenge. Senior Greg Burnham scored his second career goal for Coast Guard while classmate Patrick Palermo-Re had his 12th career assist and Dakota Harich made two saves. The teams each played overtime with nine players after receivJosh Morrissey scored the game-winner for Thomas in the 96th minute. Coast Guard takes on Southern Maine today on the second day of the tournament.

• No. 24 Notre Dame defeated No 18 UConn 3-0, handing the Huskies (2-1) their first loss of the season. Freshman Gianluca Catalano made two saves for UConn, which will take on No. 6 Indiana, the national runner-up from a year ago, on Sunday.
