Stanley Smith Jr.
Stockton, Calif. — On Monday, Aug. 6, 2018, Stanley Lowell Smith Jr., of Stockton, Calif., formerly of Mystic, passed away peacefully at the age of 76, surrounded by his loving family.
Stan was born on July 9, 1942, in New London, to Stan and Louise Smith. He graduated from R. E. Fitch High School in 1960, and from Wesleyan University in 1964, with a degree in political science. He received his law degree in 1967, from the Hastings College of Law, UCSF. In addition to his law degree, Stan received an MMA from the University of Rhode Island and MBA from the University of New Haven.
Stan served in Vietnam as a captain in the U.S. Marine Corps, Third Marine Division. Among other awards, Stan received the Navy Commendation Medal.
In addition to practicing law, Stan served as adjunct professor of management at the University of New Haven, and law professor at the U.S Coast Guard Academy, where he authored multiple publications on oil spill identification and international law.
On Aug. 21, 1987, he married Lois Reid, who survives him. Stan and Lois opened a private law practice in 1986, which they ran together, until retiring in 2000. Stan was known for his quick wit, his infectious smile, and his kind and compassionate spirit.
In addition to his wife, Stan is survived by his three children from a prior marriage, Stan Smith III (Terry), Paige Boles, and Robert Smith (RJ) of California, his sisters Susan Keach, Sara Holdridge, and Shirley Dougherty of Connecticut, his brother Steven Smith of New Hampshire, and seven grandchildren.
