— Freshman Augie Djerdjaj scored a pair of goals New London as Connecticu­t College opened its season with a 5-0 win over host Mitchell College in a men's soccer game on Tuesday. Christian Murphy had a goal and an assist while Liam Donelan and Manny Balbontin also scored for the Camels. Matt Butera and Tyler Hoadley had two assists each and Aiden Scales had an assist for Conn, which outshot Mitchell 23-6. Former NFA standout Seth Strader made nine saves for Mitchell (0-2).

College honors

• Former NFA standout R.J. Darby was named the Massachuse­tts State Collegiate Athletic Conference Offensive Player of the Week in football. Darby, a sophomore running back at Westfield State, rushed for 205 yards on 27 carries in a 25-14 win over Nichols College. Darby, who was filling in for injured starter Travon Holder, scored touchdowns on runs of 5 and 68 yards in the first half.

• Salem's Madison Bell was named the Little East Conference Rookie of the Week in volleyball. Bell, the former East Lyme High School standout, is a freshman libero at Eastern Connecticu­t State. Bell came off the bench in three matches and played all 11 sets with a team-high 38 receptions and three errors as the Warriors went 3-0. Bell led the team with 25 digs and had 18 assists.
