Another hard-luck loss for deGrom

- By MIKE FITZPATRICK AP Baseball Writer

New York — Jacob deGrom took his latest hard-luck loss in a record-setting season, getting outpitched by Jose Urena as the Miami Marlins beat the New York Mets 5-3 on Tuesday night.

In a close race for the National League Cy Young Award despite his pedestrian record, deGrom (8-9) gave up only Lewis Brinson's tworun double in seven stellar innings. The right-hander allowed three hits and struck out nine, his major league-low ERA climbing just a tick from 1.68 to 1.71.

After his outing was pushed back two days because of rain, deGrom held his opponent to fewer than four runs for the 26th straight start — breaking a big league mark set by King Cole in 1910 with the Chicago Cubs.

But in a recurring theme, all the Mets could muster at the plate was Michael Conforto's solo homer off Urena (6-12) and Kevin Plawecki's two-run shot against Drew Steckenrider with two outs in the ninth.

Conforto has homered in three consecutive games for the first time in his career.

JT Riddle came off the bench and homered into the right-field upper deck in his first at-bat for Miami since returning from a sore left wrist. After missing five games, Riddle connected in the eighth against reliever Anthony Swarzak, who made his first appearance since Aug. 3. The right-hander was recently activated from the disabled list after missing time with shoulder inflammation.

Miami got three straight hits off Robert Gsellman to start the ninth, including an RBI triple by Brian Anderson and Derek Dietrich's run-scoring double.

Urena permitted one run and four hits in 6 1/3 innings.

A resurgent Brinson doubled off the center-field fence with two outs in the fourth.

After that, deGrom set down his final 10 batters. But he is 0-2 in four starts this season against the lastplace Marlins, who were rained out the previous two days — including Monday in New York.

Up next

A single-admission doubleheader today to make up Monday's rainout. RHP Trevor Richards (3-8, 4.73 ERA) and RHP Jeff Brigham (0-1, 9.00) are the scheduled Miami starters, with RHP Zack Wheeler (10-7, 3.39) and LHP Jason Vargas (5-9, 6.75) set to go for the Mets.

Panthers' Olsen breaks foot

The Carolina Panthers will be without three-time Pro Bowl tight end Greg Olsen and second-team All-Pro Bowl right tackle Daryl Williams for the foreseeable future. The team announced Tuesday that Olsen re-fractured the same right foot that kept him out of nine games last season in Carolina's 16-8 win over Dallas on Sunday. Olsen will not have surgery and will be reevaluated on a "monthly basis." He'll remain on the team's roster in hopes that he can return later in the season as he did a year ago. Williams suffered an undisclosed knee injury and will need surgery. Ranked as the top right tackle in the NFL last season by Pro Football Focus, Williams is likely headed for injured reserve. He tore the MCL and dislocated the patella in his right knee in training camp, but fought back to play in the season opener. Rookie Ian Thomas is expected to replace Olsen in the starting lineup, while Amini Silatolu is next in line to take over at right tackle. Unlike last year, the 33-year-old Olsen opted not to have surgery. He posted a statement on Twitter Tuesday that he is optimistic that his season is not over. "After consulting with our medical team, we have determined the best course of action is to press forward with my rehab in hopes of playing again this season," Olsen said. Olsen added that he and the training staff will "re-examine our options this offseason in regard to my foot and our path forward." "To say I am disappointed in the development would be an understatement," Olsen said. "I believe my greatest career achievement has been my ability to play every game for over a decade. Unfortunately the last two seasons have not continued that trend."

Falcons place LB Jones on IR

The Atlanta Falcons have placed linebacker Deion Jones on injured reserve, taking a second 2017 Pro Bowler from the defense in less than a week. Jones hurt his foot in Thursday night's 18-12 opening loss at Philadelphia. In a statement released by the team, Falcons coach Dan Quinn said Monday that Jones will require surgery but is expected to return this season. On Friday, Quinn announced safety Keanu Neal suffered a torn ligament in his left knee and will miss the remainder of the season. Jones must remain on IR for at least six weeks. He then would have two weeks to return to the roster. The earliest date he could return would be on Nov. 11 for Atlanta's game at Cleveland. Second-year linebacker Duke Riley may take Jones' spot in the starting lineup. Quinn said Friday a combination of Damontae Kazee and Jordan Richards will be the first options to replace Neal.

Redskins re-sign WR Quick

The Washington Redskins have resigned wide receiver Brian Quick. The team announced the signing Tuesday in a flurry of roster moves that included putting rookie receiver Cam Sims on injured reserve. Quick spent last season with Washington and was released Sept. 1. Bringing back Quick makes sense after the Redskins lost Sims and and Trey Quinn and Cam Sims to high-ankle sprains in a season-opening victory at Arizona on Sunday. Quick dressed in 11 games last season, making six catches for 76 yards. He's a favorite of Gruden's and was on the bubble to make the roster out of training camp.

Packers put Trevor Davis on IR

The Green Bay Packers have placed receiver and return man Trevor Davis on injured reserve, and claimed cornerback Deante Burton off waivers from the Atlanta Falcons. Davis missed the season opener against Chicago after adding him to the injury report just a couple of hours before the game on Sunday. The thirdyear player and primary returner also missed much of training camp with a sore hamstring.
