Magowan helps Stonington boys win Piver Cup soccer title

Scores all three goals in win over Chariho (R.I.)

Stonington — Jamison Magowan scored all three goals as unbeaten Stonington Chariho (R.I.) 3-0 to win the Josh Piver Cup boys' soccer championsh­ip on Saturday.

Tyler Fidrych assisted on all three goals for the Bears (4-0) and Peter Fernholz had six saves. In other games: • Kurt Mahlke scored two goals and assisted on a third as East Lyme beat Old Saybrook 3-2 in a nonleague game. Mahlke gave East Lyme a 2-1 lead with his goal off an Alec Kosinski corner in the 77th minute and assisted on Duncan Manthous' goal a minute later. Old Saybrook scored an own goal off a corner in the final minute. Sunny Lall made six saves for East Lyme (4-1). Paddy Ryan scored a goal and Matt Rothman made five saves for Old Saybrook (1-10.

• Tyler Cady scored twice as Fitch beat Westerly 3-1 in the Piver Cup consolatio­n game. Tom Taber scored and Giovanni Valentine, Caleb Robbins and Aidan McLean each had an assist for the Falcons (3-1-1). John Healy had seven saves for the Bulldogs.

• Tyler Velazquez had two goals and an assist to pace Montville past Parish Hill 3-1. Julian Valdes had a goal and an assist, Liam Cook had an assist, and Keaton Sulman had three saves for Montville (3-0).

• Zach Tuccitto had two goals and an assist as Morgan blanked Norwich Free Academy 4-0. Xavier Epperson had seven saves for NFA (1-3).

Girls' soccer

• Jessica Detwiler scored with 31 seconds left in regulation as Stonington tied Chariho, 1-1, in the consolatio­n of the Josh Piver Cup. Megan Detwiler had the assist for the Bears (21-1) and Hannah Lamb had two saves.

• Lexi Rosado scored in the second half as North Branford shocked Old Lyme, 1-0, despite being outshot in their Shoreline Conference contest. Old Lyme, the three-time defending CIAC Class S champion, outshot the Thunderbir­ds 15-3. Sam Gray had two saves for the Wildcats (1-1, 0-1).

Girls' cross country

• Fitch's Julia Adrian earned a medal with her Top 20 finish at the Bobcat Invitation­al in Madbury, N.H. Adrian finished 18th over the 5K course in 21:05 as the Falcons finished 17th. Phillips Exeter Academy (N.H.) won the team title with 72 points.

• Mary Madaus finished 10th (22:58) and Grace Cassineri 33rd (26:23) for Williams School in a 13-team, five kilometer invitation­al at Choate. Anna Terry placed 55th (29:37), Kaite Burzin 62nd (30:09) and Carly Straub 71st (30:41).

Boys' cross country

• Williams' Hartmut Doerwaldt finished 15th (19:21) and Philip Knowlton was 19th (19:40) in a 13-team, 5K invitation­al at Choate. Also, Hunter Dolphin was 38th (21:36), Colin Ladd 46th (22:20), and Jasper Wright 79th (25:79).

H.S. football

• Thames River's Josh Brown had 22 carries for 130 yards, but the Crusaders couldn't get in the end zone as it lost to Wilcox Tech 7-0 in double overtime. Albert Velazquez ran six times for 45 yards for Thames River (1-1) and Brown had five tackles. Also, Pedro Castillo had four tackles and Roark Ryan and Eddie Cruz each had three tackles.

• Pomperaug stopped East Lyme on a 2-point conversion attempt to win 42-41 in overtime on Friday. The Panthers scored first in overtime. East Lyme scored on its first play in overtime on Tommy Mason's 10-yard run, his third touchdown run of the game, and elected to go for the win.

Chris Salemme was 16 of 33 for 271 yards and three touchdowns, Spencer Duthrie had seven catches for 102 yards and two touchdowns, and Andrew Haase had six catches for 113 yards and a touchdown for East Lyme (1-1).
