Carol Bergeson
West Chester, Pa. — Carol Stokes Bergeson, 93, passed away Sept. 4, 2018, at Barclay Friends in West Chester, Pa., with family by her side.
Born in 1924, she was the daughter of Agnes Nicholson Stokes and Francis Collins Stokes of Moorestown, N.J. Carol attended Moorestown Friends School and graduated from Smith College, Class of 1946, with a bachelor’s degree in art and history.
She was married in 1947 to shipbuilder, industrial manager and yachtsman, Lloyd Bergeson. Carol and Lloyd raised their four children in coastal communities: Noank, Ocean Springs, Miss., Norwell, Mass., and Isle au Haut, Maine.
Carol was a dedicated naturalist, Quaker and champion of human rights. Her ability to listen with deep interest and delight, created lifelong friendships.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, Lloyd Bergeson, sister Sylvia Stokes Perry, and brother Francis C. Stokes Jr. She is survived by four children, Kathryn Jensen and husband Dave Jensen, Eliza Bergeson, Edie Griffiths and husband David Griffiths, Henry Bergeson and wife Leilani Henry; grandchildren Johanna O’Connell and Benjamin Griffiths; and great-grandchild Keegan O’Connell.
A celebration of Carol’s life will be held at 2 p.m. on May 4, 2019, at the First Parish in Bedford, 75 Great Road, Bedford, Mass.
