Mattie Williams
Groton — Mattie Elizabeth Williams, beloved wife of the late John F. Williams, died peacefully at the age of 90.
Mattie was born on Sept. 13, 1928 in Waynesboro, Ga. She was the daughter of the late Colonel and Beatrice (Lewis) Coleman, also of Waynesboro. Mattie was a nurse’s assistant at Lawrence + Memorial Hospital as well as Briarcliff Convalescent Home. She also worked for many years at the Navy Exchange. Mattie enjoyed various social activities, which included dancing, socializing with friends and bowling. She also volunteered at the local elementary schools and library.
Mattie’s greatest contribution was providing for her family, always looking forward to Sunday and holiday gathering with her children and grandchildren. Mattie was married to the late John Felix Williams for 37 years.
Mattie will be lovingly missed by her children, Gerald Williams of Atlanta, Ga., Jennifer A. Williams of Uncasville, Norman J. Williams, Rodney D. Williams and Linda E. Williams, all of Groton; her two daughters-in-law, Dorothy Williams and Mary Williams; and her many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She is predeceased by her two sons, John Felix Williams Sr. and Ronald Vincent Williams Sr.
A celebration of her life will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, at Church of Christ, 1018 Route 12, Groton. Interment will follow at Starr Burying Grounds in Groton. Visiting hours are from 9 a.m. until the time of service at the church.
