No. 11 Conn men take over first place in NESCAC soccer race

Lewiston, Maine — Unbeaten Connecticu­t College took over sole possession of first place in the New England Small College Athletic Conference with a 2-0 men's soccer victory over Bates College on Saturday.

The Camels (10-0, 6-0), ranked No. 11 in the latest Division III national poll, took over the top spot with the help of Middlebury, which played No. 3 Tufts to a 1-1 draw on Saturday.

Senior Ben Manoogian broke a scoreless tie in the 76th minute when he scored off an assist from Christian Murphy, and Liam Noonan provided some insurance with his fifth goal late in the match.

Goalie AJ Marcucci made two saves to to earn his seventh straight shutout for Conn, which held an 11-10 edge in shots. Bates is 6-4, 3-4. In other matches: • Coast Guard Academy and Clark battled to a 1-1 double overtime draw in the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference.

Patrick Palermo-Re, assisted by Noah Harper, had given the Bears a 1-0 lead in the 53rd minute before Connor Ross tied the game for Clark 20 minutes later.

Goalie Dakota Harich made eight saves for the Bears (4-5-3, 1-2-1), who ran their unbeaten streak to four.

Women's soccer

• Felicia Lombardi's goal with 18:01 remaining proved to be the game-winner as Coast Guard beat Babson for just the second time in school history with a 4-3 win in the NEWMAC. Babson (4-6-2, 1-3) was 151-2 all-time against the Bears (6-4-1, 3-1-1), Coast Guard's only other win coming in 2004. Kylee Ballard, Waterford's Claire Hurley and freshman Briella Pearce also scored for CGA and freshman goalie Katharina Commins made nine saves.

• Elms College scored four goals in the second half to put away Mitchell College 5-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Goalie Drew Johndrow made 11 saves for the Mariners (1-9, 0-4), who were outshot 35-4.

Field hockey

• Shelbie McCormack broke a 1-1 tie in the second half to lift Bates to a 2-1 win over Conn College in the NESCAC. Jamie Navoni, assisted by Caroline Ferro, scored for the Camels and (2-9, 0-7) and goalie Jackie Mountford made nine saves.

Volleyball

• Mitchell earned its first win of the season with a 3-1 win over Lesley in the NECC. Game scores were 25-19, 18-25, 25-22 and 25-19. Nikki Gerald had a career-high 11 kills for the Mariners (1-11, 1-2) while Laurissa Amaker had eight kills and 14 digs, Ariana Carter seven kills, Cameron Childs 23 assists and seven aces, and Shyla Phillips-Krick 17 digs.

• Conn College swept a pair of non-conference matches, defeating Castleton 25-10, 25-9, 25-5 and host Eastern Connecticu­t 27-25, 25-14, 25-21. Against Castleton, McKaela Simons had career highs in assists (37) and aces (5) for the Camels (7-10), and Bridget Fatse added eight aces. In the win over ECSU, Katie Howley had 12 kills and 11 digs, Elle Kass had 18 digs and Grace McGee had 37 assists.
