Only that route will have detour signs, Reed said, but travelers are free to use other alternative routes.

Some work will be done from below on I-395, which might require single-lane closures on the highway during off-peak hours, Reed said. Crews also might store some equipment along the highway.

The project will entail replacing the concrete bridge

deck, all the steel bearings and some other deteriorated steel components, substructure bridge abutments and piers, painting the beam ends and installing new chain link protective fence with galvanized steel coated with PVC to prevent rust.

Reed said the projected $5.4 million cost was a “worst case” estimate, and he expects the actual cost estimate to be “much lower” once designs are completed.
