Merritt Island, Fla. — Richard G. Barrows, 99, of Merritt Island, passed away on Thursday, Sept. 13, 2018.

Born in Brockton, Mass., Richard moved to Merritt Island in 2008 from Groton, where he lived most of his life.

He served honorably in the U.S. Air Force (previously, Army Air Corps) and retired from USAF reserves as major. During his time in the military, he served as a pilot and flight engineer. He worked for Electric Boat Company in electrical design and retired in 1981.

During his time in Groton, Richard was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church. He also was previously a member of the zoning committee in Groton, Elks Lodge and an Eagle Scout and scoutmaste­r. He loved sailing and was a lifetime member of the Shennecoss­ett Yacht Club. He enjoyed reading and watching old movies. In his youth, he excelled in athletics. He played golf, tennis and basketball.

He was preceded in death by his first wife of 66 years, Kathleen “Kie” Barrows; as well as his granddaugh­ter, Taylor Abt.

Richard is survived by his wife, Patricia Barrows; two sons, Robert Barrows and Richard “Gary” Barrows (Karen); three daughters, Nancy Garwood (Richard), Janet Abt (Henry) and step/bonus daughter, Joan Burth; eight grandchild­ren, Erin, Erica, Tara, Beth, Christophe­r, Jonathan, Nicholas and Austin; as well as four great-grandchild­ren, Eliza, Elaina, Noelle and Rowan.

A memorial Mass was held at Divine Mercy Catholic Church on Saturday, Sept. 22. He will be interred at Colonel Ledyard Cemetery at a later date.
