CGA’s Kaitlyn Mooney runs to victory at Conn College Invite

Waterford — Sophomore All-American Kaitlyn Mooney won the Connecticu­t College Invitation­al on Saturday at Harkness Memorial State Park, leading Coast Guard Academy to a solid fifth-place finish.

Mooney got a bit of revenge, running a winning time of 21 minutes, 9 seconds to beat Natalie Cooper from The College of New Jersey and Natalie Bettez from Tufts. Bettez beat Mooney to win the Purple Valley Classic three weeks ago while Cooper beat Mooney two weeks ago at the Paul Short Run.

The four teams that beat Coast Guard are all ranked in the Top 16 nationally.

Freshman Laurel Felt (22:29) was 19th, Olivia Suski (23:02 personal best) placed 45th and senior Anita Green was 59th (23:16) to lead the Bears.

"Kaitlyn establishe­d that she is one of the top runners in the nation with the win today over some very talented competitio­n," Coast Guard interim head coach Greg Ahnrud said.

Men's cross country

• Coast Guard's Colton Atkins placed 38th (25:53) and Andre Gallant 42nd (25:55) as the Bears placed 11th at the Conn College Invite at Harkness State Park.

Men's soccer

• Old Lyme's William Ferguson converted a penalty kick in the first half to help Mitchell College defeated New England College 2-0 in the New England Collegiate Conference. Quinn Outerbridg­e, assisted by Carl Wilson, added an insurance goal three minutes into the second half for the Mariners (5-7, 3-2) and goalie Seth Strader of Norwich Free Academy made one save to earn the shutout.

• Paul Beatty had a goal and an assist as WPI rallied for a 2-1 win over Coast Guard in a New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference match. Taka Lendon headed in a cross from Daniel Taglianett­i for the Bears' only goal in the first half while goalie Dakota Harich made four saves. CGA is 4-7-3, 1-3-1.

Women's soccer

• Coast Guard had its school-record unbeaten streak snapped at four as the Bears lost to MIT 4-0 in a NEWMAC game. MIT (11-2-2, 6-0) led 3-0 at halftime. Katharina Commins made five saves for Coast Guard (7-51, 4-2-1).

• Conn College lost to No. 23 Tufts in a New England Small College Athletic Conference game, losing 2-1 in overtime.

Kat Norton scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season for the Camels (7-5, 2-5) and teammate Sarah Williams made five saves.

Volleyball

• Coast Guard split a pair of non-conference matches, losing to No. 3 Johnson & Wales 25-13, 25-13 and 25-22 before bouncing back to beat Roger Williams 19-25, 25-19, 2522 and 25-23.

Angelou Dunton led the Bears (159) against J&W with 10 kills and 14 digs while Makenna Martin had 25 assists and Veronica Hine nine digs. Against Roger Williams, Amanda Dake had 15 kills and 17 digs, Dunton added 14 kills and 19 digs, Maddie James had 11 kills and Martin had 44 assists.

• Becker outlasted Mitchell 25-22, 25-21, 27-29 and 25-22 in the NECC. Ariana Carter had a career-high 14 kills and four blocks for the Mariners (2-13, 1-4) while Laurissa Amaker added 10 kills and 29 digs and Cameron Childs had 31 assists and 26 digs.

Field hockey

• No. 3 Tufts scored a pair of second-half goals to defeat Conn College 2-0 in the NESCAC. Goalie Jackie Mountford made 10 saves for the Camels (3-10, 0-8), who played their final home match of the season.
