Warren’s DNA test

-

P resident Donald Trump sure knows how to get under people’s skin.

Before he turned into a presidential candidate, Trump’s relentless conspiracy-based ranting about the authenticity of President Obama’s citizenship led Obama’s White House to distribute his “long-form” birth certificate to establish his Hawaiian birth.

Now Trump’s mockery of Sen. Elizabeth Warren, D-Mass., goaded her to release the results of a DNA test showing “strong evidence” that Warren has American Indian ancestry “6-10 generations ago.”

In taking the bait, Warren is playing the game by Trump’s rules. But the mockery won’t end and Trump won’t admit any fault. But perhaps the news media questions on the topic will ease.

This manufactured controversy goes back to Warren claiming, in a college application, that Native American ancestry is part of her Oklahoma roots. There is no evidence the contention benefited Warren as she rose to become a Harvard law professor.

But Trump had great fun with it, mocking Warren as “Pocahontas,” in the process turning a Native American historical figure into an insult, while raising questions about Warren’s honesty.

Now if only someone could prod President Trump to come clean on something that would be actually significant — the release of his tax returns.

In any event, we have to agree with The Late Show host Stephen Colbert that the DNA “test accurately reveals, with high confidence, that Elizabeth Warren is running for president.”
