New London — Jane Louise Glover, 71, of New London, passed away in Atlanta, Ga. on Saturday, Oct. 13, 2018.

Known to her friends as “The Mayor”, Jane was born in Nebraska City, Neb., Jan. 26, 1947. She was the daughter of Mary M. Givehand and Luther D. Givehand.

Jane was a successful community activist who graduated from Nebraska City High School. She went on to earn a bachelor’s degree at Peru State College and a master’s degree in library science from the University of Rhode Island. She taught for a year in New London public schools before serving as president of the Connecticu­t Education Associatio­n. She also worked for many years as a children’s librarian in the New London and Groton Public Libraries.

Very civic minded, she served as a Democrat on the Board of Education and City Council, including three terms as ceremonial mayor. She was chief administra­tive officer under the mayoral leadership of Daryl Finizio as well as director of Kente Cultural Center in New London.

She was a member of Trinity Baptist Church in New London. She will be sadly missed but will live on in the hearts of her family.

She is survived by her mother, Mary M. Givehand; two brothers, Luther D. Givehand and Robert C. Givehand and wife, Julie A. Givehand; daughter, Natalie L. Rowe and husband, Jerald Rowe; granddaugh­ters, Brooklynn and Jatavia Rowe; nieces, Sephora, Mahlah, Jael and Tehra Givehand.

She was predecease­d by her father, Luther D. Givehand.

Calling hours will be held from 11 a.m. until 1 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 25, 2018, at Fulton-Theroux Funeral Home, 181 Ocean Ave., New London. A funeral service will immediatel­y follow at 1 p.m. in the funeral home, followed by burial in Cedar Grove Cemetery, New London.
