ECC postseason tournament play begins today in three sports

The 2018 Eastern Connecticu­t Conference postseason tournament schedule begins on Friday with quarterfin­al games in three sports: boys' soccer, girls' soccer and volleyball.

There was a change in the pairings for the Division I girls' soccer tournament after a "miscalcula­tion" in the final standings was discovered, tournament chairman Jan Voland said Thursday.

As a result, Waterford and Bacon Academy swapped seeds with the Lancers moving up to No. 5 and the Bobcats down to No. 6. Waterford will now play at No. 4 Killingly at 2:45 p.m. while Bacon will visit No. 3 Norwich Free Academy at Fontaine Field at 4.

Top-seeded Plainfield will host No. 8 Ledyard at 2 p.m. and No. 2 Woodstock Academy will host No. 7 East Lyme at 3 in the other Division I quarters.

In the Division II tournament No. 1 Montville hosts No. 8 New London at 5:45 p.m., No. 2 Stonington hosts No. 7 Griswold at 3, No. 3 Tourtellot­te hosts No. 6 Putnam at 2 and No. 4 Lyman Memorial hosts No. 5 St. Bernard at 6:30.

The semifinals in both divisions will be held on Tuesday with the championsh­ip matches scheduled for Thursday, Nov. 1, the Division I game at East Lyme and the Division II game at Montville, both at 7 p.m.

All boys' soccer tournament quarterfin­als will also be played on Friday. In Division I, defending champion Stonington is the top seed and will host No. 8 Fitch at 3 p.m., while No. 5 Bacon is at No. 4 Woodstock at 3:45, No. 7 NFA is at No. 2 East Lyme at 2 and No. 6 Waterford is at No. 3 Ledyard at 3:45. In Division II, No. 8 Plainfield is at No. 1 Lyman Memorial at 3:45 p.m., No. 5 St. Bernard is at No. 4 Montville at 3:45, No. 7 Tourtellot­te is at No. 2 Windham at 3, and No. 6 Griswold is at No. 3 Wheeler at 3.

There are only three volleyball quarterfin­al matches Friday with the other five being played on Saturday. In Division I, No. 3 Waterford will host No. 6 Ledyard at 5 p.m., while in Division II, No. 5 Wheeler visits No. 4 Griswold at 5 and No. 7 New London visits No. 2 Montville at 5.

H.S. volleyball

• Grasso Tech ended its season by rallying to win its first match, 3-1, win over Classical of Hartford. Game scores were 21-25, 25-14, 25-19 and 25-20. Erin Blake and 18 service points, seven aces, two kills and 10 digs for the Eagles while fellow senior Heather Carlin had 12 points, two aces, five assists, one block and five digs. Sophomore Samarie Delgado added three aces, six kills and eight digs.

College honors

• UConn senior Napheesa Collier was named to the 20-player Katrina McClain Award watch list, an award that honors the top power forward in Division I women's basketball. Collier was also a finalist for the award last year, when she was a thirdteam All-American and first-team All-American Athletic Conference pick after averaging 16.1 points and 7.4 rebounds per game. The list will be cut to 10 players in February, with the winner being announced during the Final Four in Tampa, Fla.

• The Coast Guard Academy men's and women's cross country teams placed of six runners, three from each team, on the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference Academic All-conference team. Junior marine and environmen­tal sciences majors Kirsten Carson and Olivia Suski were named to the team for the second straight season while sophomore Mia Huncharek, an operations research and computer analysis major, was named for the first time. For the men, senior Colton Atkinson, a management major, was honored for the third straight season while senior Benjamin Taminger, a naval architectu­re and marine engineerin­g major, and sophomore Logan Bonner were named for the first time.

H.S. boys' soccer

• Angel Bermudo had one goal and one assist as St. Thomas More defeated The Eagle School 2-0. A.J. Bucci also scored for the Chancellor­s (3-7) while goalie Alvaro Carvajal made four saves.
