Nora Spens, M.D.

Stoninigto­n — Nora H. Spens, M.D., 96, a longtime resident of Stonington Borough, died peacefully on Sunday, Oct. 14, 2018.

Born in Brentford, England, on March 2, 1922, she was the daughter of the late Gerald J. and Kathleen A. (Richard) Sutton. Dr. Spens served as a “Wren” in the Women’s Royal Naval Service during World War II. She went on to have a long and distinguis­hed career as a medical doctor in England and in the United States, working at St. Luke’s Hospital in New York and retiring from the Westerly Hospital in the mid-1980s.

Dr. Spens was an avid lifelong sailor who enjoyed cruising local waters and made two trips across the Atlantic.

Nora after her retirement, dedicated herself to decades of volunteer work with the Chorus of Westerly, Christ Church Choir and to Camp Ogontz in New Hampshire. She served on numerous committees for the Chorus and sang with her choral family from 1972 to 2006.

The Chorus of Westerly will offer and dedicate its entire 60th season in Nora’s loving memory with heartfelt thanks and sincere appreciati­on for her generosity and volunteeri­sm.

Dr. Spens is survived by several cousins in England; and her beloved choral family.

She was predecease­d by her brother, John Sutton.

A celebratio­n of Nora’s life will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 3, 2018, at Christ Episcopal Church, corner of Elm and Broad streets, Westerly.

Arrangemen­ts have been entrusted to the Buckler-Johnston Funeral Home, 121 Main St., Westerly.
