CGA’s Kaitlyn Mooney defends NEWMAC cross country title

Conn’s Aschale places second at NESCAC men’s race in Boston

Northampto­n, Mass. — Coast Guard Academy's Kaitlyn Mooney successful­ly defended her individual title and helped the Bears to a third-place team finish during Saturday's New England Women's and Women's Athletic Conference women's cross country championsh­ip at Smith College.

Mooney, a sophomore All-American, finished the race in 18 minutes, 38 seconds, winning by 21 seconds in rainy, wet conditions.

Coast Guard finished with 85 points and trailed only team champion MIT's 20 points and WPI, which was the runnerup with 71 points. The Bears have finished third in the team standings for three straight years.

Mooney earned All-NEWMAC honors along with junior teammate Olivia Suski, who placed 13th overall in 19:57 to make the all-conference team for the first time in her career. In other races: • Connecticu­t College finished 11th in the New England Small College Athletic Conference championsh­ip meet at Franklin Park with 249 points.

Middlebury won the team title with 47 points. Meredith Cronin led the Camels by placing 25th overall in 23:27. Also scoring for Conn were Tarvis Hintlian (48th, 24:05), Eva Brydson (52nd, 24:12), Caroline Grape (64th, 24:26) and Hannah Noyes (89th, 25:01).

• Mitchell College's appearance in the New England Collegiate Conference Championsh­ip was put on hold for the day due to rainy conditions as NECC officials postponed the race until Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Stanley Park in Westfield, Mass.

Men

• Conn College placed fifth in the NESCAC championsh­ip meet at Franklin Park in Boston. The Camels finished with 148 points while Amherst won the team title with 60 points. Junior Danny Aschale led Conn by placing second, finishing the wet 8K course in 25:29, less than two sets behind individual champion Ryan Cox of Williams. Senior Scott Mason also earned All-NESCAC honors by placing seventh overall (25:53) followed by Price Day in 11th (26:02), Russell Adam in 74th (27:18) and Josh Simensky in 98th (27:44).

• Junior Andre Gallant and senior Colton Atkinson earned all-conference honors as Coast Guard placed third for the second straight season at the NEWMAC Championsh­ip at Smith College. Gallant finished 10th in 27:06 while Atkinson was one spot behind in 11th in 27:08 as the Bears finished with 84 points. MIT captured the team title with 17 and WPI was second with 52.

• Mitchell's appearance in the NECC Championsh­ip was put on hold for the day as conference officials postponed the race until today at 9:30 a.m. in Westfield, Mass.
