Groton — Ethel A. (Martin) Alexander, 71, passed away peacefully on Saturday, Oct. 27, 2018, after an extended illness.

Ethel was born June 28, 1947, in New London and spent her childhood and young adult years in Gales Ferry, in a loving home with her parents and brother on Bluff Road on the Thames River. She graduated from Norwich Free Academy in Norwich, Conn., and Becker College in Worcester, Mass. She joined Pfizer Inc. in Groton in 1971 and retired in 2004 after 34 years of loyal service. Ethel loved being a part of her granddaughter Skyeler’s life since she was born and watching her grow into a beautiful, intelligent, and talented young woman. She loved her dogs and being outdoors kayaking and enjoyed the beauty of nature; especially bird watching. In her younger years, she loved skiing and cross country skiing with her friends. She loved going to Block Island, R.I., throughout her life and in her later years, traveling to Europe, visiting England, Italy and France.

Ethel was preceded in death by her mother, Betty Martin (2009); father, Roy S. Martin (2012); and her brother, Roy M. Martin (1999).

She is survived by her loving family, Heather, Tim, and Skyeler Jackson, of Chocowinity, N.C.; Karen Alexander of Greenville, N.C.; Debra (Pope) and Bill Lewis of Pinetops, N.C.; Janet Lewis, of Pinetops, N.C.; and former husband, Phillip Alexander.

She is also survived by her cousins in Groton, Conn., Howie, Kathleen, Tommy, William, and Bruce Martin; Linda Daugherty (Texas) and Janice McPhail of Dallas, Ga.

Ethel has been given the gift of friendship many times over from childhood and all during her adult life. These friends, like family, will be missed. However, the love, support, life lessons, and prayers she received from them will never be forgotten.

Ethel recently joined Oakmont Baptist Church in Greenville, N.C. and they became her “wonderful and caring” church family. She will never forget the Pastor’s daily visits to the hospital to visit and pray with her and she will be forever thankful for their constant prayers in her behalf.

A memorial service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Thursday at Oakmont Baptist Church, 1100 Red Banks Road, Greenville, N.C. An interment will take place at the Starr Burying Grounds in Groton, Conn. She will be laid to rest with the family members who have passed before her.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Oakmont Baptist Church, 1100 Red Banks Road, Greenville, NC, 27858.

Arrangements are by Wilkerson Funeral Home and Crematory.
