Around the region

• Lauren Rahr of Waterford capped off her Endicott College tennis career by becoming only the second student-athlete from her school to receive the Commonwealth Coast Conference Senior Scholar Athlete award. A mathematics major with a secondary education concentration, she also has earned all-conference academic team and Intercollegiate Tennis Association scholar-athlete honors all four years. She has a 3.95 cumulative grade point average. Rahr finished with a career record of 5920, tying for fifth best for combined singles and doubles winning percentage on the program's all-time list. • WPI's Dave Chen, a junior from Niantic, was named the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference men's swimmer of the week and competed on the conference relay team of the week. Competing in the Worcester City Championships last weekend, Chen was part of four wins and received the Justin Ferris swimmer of the meet honors. He took first in the 100-yard breaststroke in a meet-record 58.35 seconds and the 200 breaststroke (a meet-record 2:09.76) while swimming a leg on the winning 400 medley relay team (a meet record 3:27.94) and 200 medley relay team. • Junior Jacob Martin, who attended Norwich Free Academy as a high school freshman and then spent three years at Windham High School, is serving as one of four captains for the Hofstra University wrestling team. Martin has won 24 matches in his collegiate career. • The Little East Conference picked Eastern Connecticut State University freshman Madison Bell of Salem and East Lyme High as its rookie of the week. Bell, a libero, averaged 4.43 digs per set while helping the Warriors go 3-0 last week and win the program's first regular season title since 2006. She ranks fifth in the league in digs (337) and sixth in digs per set (3.79).

• Senior running back Kyle McKinnon of New London had another productive game for the Western Connecticut State University football team, rushing for a teambest 71 yards on 15 carries and adding a touchdown in a 33-12 rout of Fitchburg State on Saturday. The Colonials improved to 8-0.

• Stonington graduate Ella Rath scored her team-leading 10th goal of the season in the UMass Dartmouth women's soccer team's 5-1 loss to Worcester State on Thursday.

Mariners riding a wave

• Mitchell College freshman Cameron Childs earned a spot on the All-New England Collegiate Conference volleyball third team. A setter, Childs started all 19 games and ranked third nationally in aces per set at 0.97. She's third in league action in assists (190), assists per set (5.94), service aces (25) and service aces per set (0.78). Junior Ariana Carter made the all-sportsmanship team.

Mitchell placed six players on the All-NECC men's soccer team. Old Lyme's William Ferguson and Christian

Urena were named to the first team while Seth Strader of Preston and NFA made the second team, Wheeler's

T.J. Condon and Waterford's Eduardo Tineo made the third team and Mason Rubino mad the all-sportsmanship team. Ferguson, a defender, made the first team for the second time while Condon, the only four-year starter for the Mariners, earned All-NECC honors for the third time. • Strader, a junior goalie was selected as NECC Player of the Week for the first time. He posted two shutouts, making seven saves to beat Becker, 1-0, and stopping two shots in a 1-0 win over Lesley. In league play, he's posted four shutouts and a stingy 0.97 goals against average.

Tracking the Bears

• Freshman Josie McGuire was selected as the NEWMAC women's swimmer of the week after helping the Bears beat Springfield for the first time in school history. McGuire captured the 500 freestyle (5:15.74) and 1,000 freestyle (10:44.70) and swam a leg on the second-place 200 freestyle relay team.

Camel highlights

Tough finish for the Connecticut College men's soccer team. The Camels dropped two of their last three games, including a 1-0 decision to Hamilton in Sunday's New England Small College Athletic Conference tournament quarterfinal. At 12-2-2, they still have a shot at an at-large bid to the upcoming NCAA Division III tournament. The field will be announced on Monday. As of Oct. 21, the Camels were second in the NCAA New England regional rankings. • After qualifying for the NCAA tournament last season and going 12-4-1 overall, the Conn women's soccer team struggled this fall and failed to qualify for the NESCAC tournament, finishing 7-6-2 overall.
