MIT ends CGA's season with 1-0 win in NEWMAC semis

Cambridge, Mass. — Sophia Struckman scored the game's lone goal just three minutes into the second half top-seeded MIT edged No. 4 Coast Guard Academy 1-0 in the semifinals of the New England Women's and Men's Athletic Conference women's soccer tournament on Thursday night.

The Bears, appearing in the NEWMAC semis for the first team, end the best season in program history 11-7-1. The 11 wins is a single-season record and the senior class of Kali Borden, Riley Cassidy and Anna Niedermeye­r will graduate with the most wins in program history (33).

MIT (15-2-3) will host No. 2 Springfiel­d, a 3-1 winner over No. 3 Emerson, in Saturday's final at 1 p.m.

Freshman goalie Katharina Commins made 10 saves Coast Guard, which was outshot 22-7.

H.S. cross country

• East Lyme's Sam Whittaker and Chris Abbey qualified for the New England Championsh­ips by placing among the Top 25 individual finishers at the State Open at Wickham Park in Manchester.

Whittaker, a senior, finished 16th overall in 16 minutes, 26 seconds over the 5K course while Abbey was the final qualifier in 25th-place in 16:43. The New England meet will take place next Saturday at Derryfield Park in Manchester, N.H.

The Vikings, the lone representa­tive in the boys' race, placed 12th with 266 points.

New Milford's Eli Nahom was the individual winner in 15:54 while Xavier placed four runners in the top nine and cruised to the team title with 75 points.

In the girls' race, Montville senior Mady Whittaker was the top local finisher, placing 43rd overall in 20:37, while St. Bernard's Brigid Kunka was 72nd in 21:12 and East Lyme's Madison Sjostrom was 127th in 22:22. Bacon Academy freshman Jordan Malloy, the Eastern Connecticu­t Conference champion, was the top ECC finisher in 35th place (20:27).

H.S. volleyball

• Top-seeded Bullard-Havens Tech advanced to the Connecticu­t Technical Conference tournament final with a 25-23, 27-25 and 25-21 victory over No. 5 Norwich Tech in the semifinals. JoJo Perez had 10 service points to lead the Warriors (10-11), while Amaya Mendez and Riley Riewerts each finished with nine kills and seven assists. Bullard-Havens is 21-1.

Waterford hires two new coaches

• First-year Waterford athletic director Chris Landry announced the hiring of two new head coaches. Patrick Callan will take over the boys' swimming and diving program this winter while Christine Dulin will be the new girls' lacrosse coach in the spring.

Callan replaces Brett Arnold, who opted to coach only the girls' program in the fall, while Dulin, the former Christine Lillis, replaces Audrey Montanaro, who resigned following the 2018 season.

Callan has been an assistant under Arnold in both programs, and has continued to assist the girls' program this fall. Dulin has been involved in the girls' lacrosse program since its inception in 2007, first as a player and for the last several years as Montanaro's assistant.
