Monstrously good

- — Rick Koster

Truth told, most of the best bands in the world aren’t the ones who are famous. We’re talking per capita here. Sure, no one’s going to argue The Beatles or REM or Van Halen weren’t good and deserved their success.

But the clubs and small venues of the world are clustered with amazing and great and way-underrated groups who continue to slog it out for all the right reasons. This applies to Colorado’s Big Head Todd and the Monsters, who have a million hummable hooks and more chops than a jam session at a Phish tribute festival.

If nothing else, show up Satuday when Todd and the boys hit the Mohegan Sun Wolf Den and you can hear their few genuine and startlingly good hits, “Resignation Superman,” “Circle” and “Bittersweet.” But stick around for the whole presentation. Their latest record, 2017’s “New World Arisin’,” is a solid and pleasing effort of timeless guitar rock churned out by some very good players who — yes — are in it because they can’t imagine doing anything else. Big Head Todd and the Monsters, 8 p.m. Saturday, Mohegan Sun Wolf Den; free; 1-800-745-3000.
