Venice, Fla. — Ge­orge E. Slater, 89, of Venice, pre­vi­ously of New London, passed away on Wed­nes­day, Oct. 17, 2018.

He was born on Dec. 2, 1928, to Ed­win P. and Mar­garet V. Slater in Fall River, Mass.

Ge­orge is sur­vived by his lov­ing wife of 61 years, Pa­tri­cia; five chil­dren, Wendy, Eric and Bruce Slater, Pamela Flynn and Christine Ma­sura; eight grand­chil­dren, Caitlin, Pa­trick and Caroline Flynn, Sarah and Mary Slater, and Danny, Ti­mothy and Marcy Ma­sura; one great-grand­son, Tyler Slater; and two sib­lings, Mar­ion Ap­pleby and Ralph Slater.

He was pre­de­ceased by his sis­ter, Ruth Root; and two grand­sons, Lawrence Flynn and Bobby Ma­sura.

Ge­orge grad­u­ated high school from North­field Mount Herman, earned a bach­e­lor’s de­gree from the Univer­sity of Con­necti­cut and a mas­ter’s de­gree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplo­macy at Tufts Univer­sity. He was awarded a Ful­bright Schol­ar­ship and stud­ied abroad in Turkey. Af­ter his re­turn to the U.S., he at­tended Naval Of­fi­cer Can­di­date School and spent 20 years serv­ing in the U.S. Navy, in both ac­tive duty and the Navy Re­serves.

Ge­orge had a long ca­reer in bank­ing in Con­necti­cut and real es­tate in Venice, Fla., fol­lowed by a long and happy re­tire­ment. He spent many years par­tic­i­pat­ing in Ro­tary Club In­ter­na­tional in both Con­necti­cut and Venice. Dur­ing his youth, Ge­orge spent many sum­mers sail­ing and fish­ing with his fam­ily at Gro­ton Long Point. Since 1976, he lived in Venice on the beau­ti­ful Gulf of Mex­ico. He was an avid bridge player.

A Mass of Chris­tian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Fri­day, Nov. 30, 2018, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 425 S. Tami­ami Trail, Os­prey, FL 34229. Fi­nal in­ter­ment will be at Cedar Grove Ceme­tery in New London.
