George Slater
Venice, Fla. — George E. Slater, 89, of Venice, previously of New London, passed away on Wednesday, Oct. 17, 2018.
He was born on Dec. 2, 1928, to Edwin P. and Margaret V. Slater in Fall River, Mass.
George is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Patricia; five children, Wendy, Eric and Bruce Slater, Pamela Flynn and Christine Masura; eight grandchildren, Caitlin, Patrick and Caroline Flynn, Sarah and Mary Slater, and Danny, Timothy and Marcy Masura; one great-grandson, Tyler Slater; and two siblings, Marion Appleby and Ralph Slater.
He was predeceased by his sister, Ruth Root; and two grandsons, Lawrence Flynn and Bobby Masura.
George graduated high school from Northfield Mount Herman, earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Connecticut and a master’s degree from the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University. He was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship and studied abroad in Turkey. After his return to the U.S., he attended Naval Officer Candidate School and spent 20 years serving in the U.S. Navy, in both active duty and the Navy Reserves.
George had a long career in banking in Connecticut and real estate in Venice, Fla., followed by a long and happy retirement. He spent many years participating in Rotary Club International in both Connecticut and Venice. During his youth, George spent many summers sailing and fishing with his family at Groton Long Point. Since 1976, he lived in Venice on the beautiful Gulf of Mexico. He was an avid bridge player.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 30, 2018, at Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church, 425 S. Tamiami Trail, Osprey, FL 34229. Final interment will be at Cedar Grove Cemetery in New London.
