St. Thomas More men win basketball home opener 74-65

Montville — Ghared Boyce scored 20 points as St. Thomas More won its home opener with a 74-65 men's basketball victory over Redemption Christian Academy on Monday.

Mik Lynott added 13 points and Jair Curry 10 for the Chancellor­s, who also got eight points and five blocked shots from Wayne Bristol.

H.S. field hockey

• Second-seeded Stonington plays No. 3 Immaculate in the Class S state semifinals on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at Wethersfie­ld High School. The Bears (17-1-2) advanced with a 2-0 victory over New Fairfield in the quarterfin­als while Immaculate eliminated defending champion North Branford 3-1. Immaculate (14-1-1) also defeated New Fairfield 2-1 during the regular season.

Men's soccer

• UConn received an at-large bid into the NCAA Division I tournament. The Huskies (115-2) will host Atlantic 10 champion Rhode Island at 7 p.m. on Thursday in the first round. The winner will travel to No. 2 overall seed Indiana in the second round. The Hoosiers beat the Huskies 1-0 during the regular season. This will be UConn's 36th NCAA appearance and first since 2015.

Women's basketball

• UConn seniors Napheesa Collier and Katie Lou Samuelson, and junior point guard Crystal Dangerfiel­d have been named to the 50-player Naismith Trophy watch list, a national player of the year award. The midseason 30 team will be announced on Feb. 11, 2019, and that list will be narrowed down to 10 semifinali­st on March 4 and four finalists on March 22. The award will be presented on April 6. Collier, Samuelson and Dangerfiel­d were named to the Wooden Award watch list last week. The three are American Athletic Conference preseason first team selections.
