Roberta Tuttle
New London — Roberta Wilson Tuttle, 67, award winning religious journalist, wife and mother, passed away on Tuesday, Nov. 13, 2018, close to the home waters she cherished and surrounded by loved ones.
Born in Pittsburg, Pa., to John Paul Wilson and Mary Moran, Roberta was known by many as Beeta, a childhood nickname. She attended Sacred Heart Academy in Hamden and was a graduate of Fairfield University, where she was a pre-med major.
Instead of medicine, she chose journalism. Her career began at the New Haven Register where she was a feature writer. Roberta moved to The Day in New London, she went from features to myriad hard news assignments. She was especially fond of the maritime beat, from the Coast Guard to the comings and goings at New London’s vibrant waterfront.
Roberta topped her journalistic career as executive editor of the Catholic Transcript in Bloomfield, serving the Archdiocese of Hartford. Under her leadership, the Transcript staff won a host of professional awards from the Catholic Press Association, New England Newspaper and Press Association and Society of Professional Journalists.
Roberta is survived by William S. Tuttle III, her husband of 37 years; and their son, William Paul Tuttle; her sisters, Sister Paul Mary of Jesus of Kansas City, Mo. and Catherine A. Wilson, of Indianapolis, Ind.
A Mass of Christian Burial is scheduled at noon Friday, at St. Thomas Chapel at the Pastoral Center, 467 Bloomfield Ave., Bloomfield.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Little Sisters of the Poor or Eastern Connecticut Hospice.
Private burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery, New London.
