ONLINE FEEDBACK

-

Here was some of the reaction on theday.com to our Nov. 27 editorial, “Pay hike due for New London mayor,” which made the argument the city needs to increase the mayoral salary of $86,000 to be fair and attract qualified candidates.

“I will state it again: That since 2011 the Taxpayers of New London has had an Attorney as the Mayor for only $86 K per year is a deal. The only more qualified professional than a Attorney to be Mayor of New London would be an Actuary. Why screw with a great deal for the Taxpayers of New London that is working?” — Jeff Suntup

“This editorial fails to factor performance which should be a consideration. Let's consider the taxpayers and residents when finding a new salary and not just the cost to fill a seat.” — Reid Burdick

“I understand the sentiments of Reid B and Jeff Suntup. However, it will be hard to find the best candidate when paying 86,000. It will certainly attract retirees. I think the City deserves more and likely will get more when more people toss their hats in the ring and run to help improve New London.” — Scott Mattson

“The median income of a FULL TIME worker in the City of New London is LESS than $25,000 a year! The Mayor currently makes MORE than three times the median city worker. The Mayor also gets a car, and city gas, without the burden of a car tax, or insurance. This has significant value. Ask any median income worker in the City! The Mayor gets a 401k that in one term reaches value in excess of $50,000. The Mayor also gets a great comprehensive government health care plan and leaves office with an HSA valued at $4k per 4 year term. In 2011, I ran for Mayor, as did (any did many other candidates). We have never had a shortage of candidates. Politics should be a public service.” — Former Mayor Daryl Justin Finizio
