Wallingfor­d — William Herbert Wharton, 75, of Wallingfor­d, formerly of Oakdale, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 2, 2018, at Masonicare Health Center in Wallingfor­d.

William was born on Jan. 30, 1943, a son of the late Florence Virginia (Sherman) and Herbert A. Wharton and spent his childhood in West Orange, N.J. He earned a degree in Engineerin­g at Worcester Polytechni­c Institute in Massachuse­tts and took graduate classes to further his education at the University of Connecticu­t. William was an Engineer at the Naval Underwater Warfare Center in New London. He spent his entire career there. William was an avid gardener and loved to spend time outdoors. A coin and stamp collector, he could spend hours poring over his collection­s and researchin­g new additions. He also loved music and movies. He was very faithful and supportive of many churches, wildlife organizati­ons, and was charitable beyond belief when anybody needed help.

William is survived by three children, Heather Wharton of Farmington, Cynthia Grenier of Johnson, Vt., and Christine Fitzmauric­e and her husband, John, of Cheshire; his former wife and friend, Kathy Wharton of East Lyme; as well as his five grandchild­ren, Kenny, Elizabeth, Kayla, Patrick and Stephen.
