Montville wrestling coach Gary Wilcox honored by CHSCA

Montville High School wrestling coach Gary Wilcox has been named coach of the year in his sport by the Connecticu­t High School Coaches Associatio­n.

Wilcox, in his 17th season with the Indians, led this year's team to a 22-2 record in dual meets and a 4-0 record in Eastern Connectiut Conference Division III.

Wilcox has a 338-86 record with the Indians and led them to the 2003 Class S state title. His teams have finished second in state meets four times, won five ECC Division titles and had 17 of his wrestlers with state titles.

H.S. track and field

• Lauren Ross finished third in the high jump (4 feet, 8 inches), was fourth in the 55 hurdles (9.29 seconds), and sixth in the long jump (154.25) at the Class S indoor track and field championsh­ips at New Haven.

Bloomfield won both meets. The girls' scored 97 points and Old Saybrook was second (58.25). The boys' won in commanding fashion with 115 points, more than double what runner-up Old Saybrook scored (48).

The Montville girls' placed seventh (23) and St. Bernard finished in a tie for 18th (six).

Katelin Price, Michaela MacCracken, Alexandria Peck and Mady Whittaker of Montville finished third in both the sprint medley relay (4:25.68) and 4x400 relay (4:14.16). Also, Alexis Delucia was sixth in the 600 (1:51.42) and Elizabeth Bowman was sixth in the 1,000 (3:17.69).

St. Bernard's Sophia Duhig, Lillian Turner, Serena Britner and Brigid Kunka of placed third in the 4x800 relay (10:30.62).

Tyrone Mack placed fourth in the shot put (48-8) in the boys' meet for Montville, which finished tied for 19th with four points.

H.S. boys' basketball

• Josh Dodd made a shot at the buzzer to give Tourtellot­te a 57-55 win over Montville in an ECC Division IV game. Spencer Fulone of Tourtellot­te made a 3-pointer to send the game to overtime. Ethan McKinney and Ryan Champagne scored 13 points each for Montville (6-10, 2-3).

Women's basketball

• Amina Wiley had 25 points and 15 rebounds as Mitchell College beat Lesley 88-41 in a New England Collegiate Conference game. Marissa Sweeney had 17 points and 11 rebounds and Le'Sandra Turner had 12 points and seven assists for the Mariners (14-8, 13-2).

• Massasoit Community College, ranked No. 1 in NJCAA Division III, beat Avery Point 111-80. Ashley Burke scored 26 points, Waterford's Mia Brennan had 23 points, seven assists and five steals, Rebekah Sanders of Quaker Hill had 17 points and 17 rebounds and Julitza Delgado scored 12 for the Pointers (10-11).

Men's basketball

• Avery Point lost to Massasoit Community College 85-55. East Lyme's J.R. Gandenberg­er led Avery Point (8-17) with 14 points.

H.S. hockey

• Kyle Jacobson had two goals and two assists as the Eastern CT Eagles remained unbeaten in the Nutmeg Conference with a 4-3 win over the Redhawks on Wednesday night.

Evan Tower had a goal and an assist, Ryan Huta scored a goal and Rylin Fowler made 11 saves for the Eagles (10-4-1).

Men's hockey

• Alexander Payusov scored 1:05 into overtime as UConn beat Northeaste­rn 3-2 in a Hockey East game. Brian Rigali of UConn tied the game with a goal with 1:09 left in the third period. Jachym Kondelik had a goal and an assist, Karl El-Mir had three assists and Tomas Vomacka made 31 saves for UConn (8-17-2, 3-12-2).
