All-Star point guard Jasmine Thomas re-signs with the Connecticut Sun

- — Ned Griffen

Jasmine Thomas and the Connecticut Sun have been great for one another. She's evolved into an All-Star point guard during her time with the Sun and been a big reason why they're winning again.

It's no surprise, then, that Thomas resigned with Connecticut on Thursday. Terms of the multi-year contract were not released, as per team policy.

“I'm extremely happy to be back with my Connecticut Sun family,” Thomas said. “I'm proud to be part of the growth our organization has made in the last few seasons. Our culture is amazing and our fan support is phenomenal. Connecticut feels like home to me. It's difficult to keep such a talented group together for multiple seasons, so I'm honored to continue playing with these women. I'm looking forward to my leadership role on and off the court, but also to the emergence of the many young leaders on this squad. We're determined to hang a championship banner in Mohegan Sun.”

The Sun traded for Thomas during the 2015 WNBA Draft and she has started in 133 of 134 possible games. She earned her first AllStar selection in 2017 and helped Connecticut to a winning record and the playoffs, neither of which the team had done since 2012.

Thomas, 29, was Connecticut's only player that started all 34 regular-season games last season. She was the team's second-leading scorer (12.9) and averaged 4.8 assists and 1.1 steals. She was also named an All-Defensive first-team pick for the second year, as chosen by WNBA coaches. She was a second-team pick in 2016.

“We are excited about re-signing Jas to a multi-year contract,” Sun head coach and general manager Curt Miller said. “She is a true professional and has been a leader for our young team on and off the court. She creates the pace we desire to play with at the offensive end while spearheading our defensive pressure. Jas has been a cornerstone of the team since my arrival and has played a big part in the resurgence of the Sun franchise.”

The Sun had cored Thomas, meaning that they had exclusive negotiating rights with her. Players can only receive a core designation four times in their career.

Thomas was one of Connecticut's two free agents. The other, wing Betnijah Laney, signed with the Indiana Fever on Monday.

The Sun begin their 17th season at Mohegan Sun Arena on May 25 when they host the Washington Mystics.
