2019 UConn football schedule is announced

- — Gavin Keefe

UConn opens the 2019 football season by hosting a Football Championship Subdivision program before taking on two Big Ten Conference teams.

The complete schedule was released on Thursday. Kickoff times will be announced at a later date.

Wagner, a member of the Northeast Conference, visits Rentschler Field in East Hartford on Thursday, Aug. 29, in the season opener. It will be the first meeting between the two programs.

UConn hosts Illinois on Saturday, Sept. 7, then enjoys a bye week before visiting Indiana on Saturday, Sept. 21, in Bloomington. Illinois (5-7) and Indiana (4-8) owned two of the worst overall records in the Big Ten last season.

The Huskies have never faced Illinois and are 2-0 vs. Indiana, including posting a 34-10 win on Aug. 30, 2003 in their first ever game at Rentschler Field.

It is a slightly less difficult start for the Huskies than last season when they opened the season against two ranked foes, hosting Central Florida and visiting Boise State. They lost both games and ended up going a dismal 1-11 overall, 0-8 in the American Athletic Conference. Their lone win came against Rhode Island, an FCS team.

UConn opens AAC play by visiting defending league champion Central Florida in Orlando on Saturday, Sept. 28.

In the only other non-conference game, UConn visits New England rival UMass in Amherst on Saturday, Oct. 26.

The remaining games on the schedule will all happen on Saturdays, with the exception of a Friday, Nov. 1 home contest against Navy.

UConn will also host USF (Oct. 5), Houston (Oct. 19) and East Carolina (Nov. 23) while traveling to Tulane (Oct. 12), Cincinnati (Nov. 9) as well as Temple (Nov. 30) in the regular season finale.
